Tools and Advice for Hand Carving a Red Gum Bowl
I am about to finish by first project (a restoration of a 1920 iron frame school chair which I have refitted with butt jointed jarrah seat and back) and I am keen to start my next project. I was thinking of making a bowl/plater with little feet out of red gum. Red Gum is a moderately soft timber, and I wanted to use either the Lie-Nielsen - Convex Sole Block Plane or a Carba-Tec Spoon Plane.
Has anyone got any experience of either of these tools. I am iffy on the Carba-Tec brand, and I am familiar with a block plane so the Lie-Nielsen - Convex Sole Block Plane would not be much of a stretch.
However I am looking for feedback?
Is it possible to effectively do concave work like a bowl with the above tools, and are their any limitations to the tools like depth or angles of the concave work?
While Red Gum may be soft is it very hard or could it be possible to much pain?
