Trade discount cards and public liability insurance
Hello,
I've started a little handyman business on the side and want to get a trade discount on stuff. After a quick search it doesnt seem like the two big stores actually give a discount, they just give you a credit card. Anyone got experience with trade accounts?
Also can you recommend a company to get public liability insurance through ? Any tips ? Applied online and the excess was 20k for 10 mil cover? Is that normal ?
Thanks

Hi Sam, i'm insured through Imar, they seem ok but like all things, it depends whats suited to you personally but worth a look, i'm only going off my own personal experience but you're right about the main hardware stores, the discounts are bugger all if even existant on some items, you may get a better discount elsewhere having a 30 day account but they may well be more expensive to begin with. Best of luck mate.

Thanks for the replies so far.
Dropped into Masters and a 5% discount storewide is availiable if you show their trade card AND use their own credit card to pay for it.
Mitre10 have cracked down on their proper trade cards and introduced a loyalty scheme where you earn store credit for every $100 spent or something.

Masters' trade card gives nothing unless you have an account.
Bunnings' trade card gives nothing to very little, maybe 5%.
I also have a trade card at two of the small hardware stores near me. Shelf prices may be higher than Bunnings (not always) but discount varies from 0 - 10%, occasionally more. The convenience and saving on travel time makes up for slightly higher prices.
Other stores I may shop at I ask if they have a trade discount. If I am working in the area, it is likely I will need to purchase an item or two.

Thats right, the big b's trade card gives you next to nothing on most stuff, and nothing on tools etc. Usually you do get a discount on timber and and trade yard area stuff and paint.
If you a get them to quote a price for you first you should get a better price. Its the same at any trade yard really. Even with an account, if you walk in a grab a few bits and pieces theyll charge you full whack, but if you call up first and get a quote sent through you will get a different price. Its a joke.
