Traditional carpentry course in Melbourne
This is my first post to this forum and I'm hoping to be guided by some of the experienced people here. My background is that I'm an Architect (currently not practicing though) and in the past have often undertaken personal projects (such as furniture) just using hand tools and basic techniques as that was all I had. The designs were always suited to the techniques I was going to use.
My current architectural interest has undertaken dramatic development and I am interested in learning some of the traditional techniques of woodworking, firstly for small projects (such as furniture) and then later for structural construction of my own buildings. Initially right now, I would like to learn some of the traditional Japanese carpentry methods of joining timbers, finishing timbers naturally and working with the timbers to understand their workability.
My questions:
a) what might be some suitable schools for me to undertaken courses in Melbourne?
b) is there a way to use workshop facilities (on a hire or member basis) in Melbourne (ie after completing courses)?
Relationship based learning and use of facilities interests me greatly as I would like to develop contacts with people whom I could collaborate with in the future on projects or learn from their experience.
I would be appreciative of any help people can give me.
Thanks,
Matthew

Matthew,
I can recommend Holmesglen TAFE. They have a range of short courses (approx 8 weeks each) ranging from beginner's techniques through to cabinet-making.

hi,
I dont have any basic knowledge in the stream of construction and carpentry , and wanted to apply for admission in nmit for this course.
can you suggest me how to start with to get into the feild of carpentry like whether i have to go for a short course or join the course in any college. Im little confused about the industry as how to approach the colleges and what colleges are advised for a better entry in the feild of construction and carpentry.
it would be great if you could clear my confusion and suggest me a better thing to start with and help me in creating a good career in this feild.
thank u

Hi Amar and MatthewF,
I did a woodcarving course at the Victorian Woodworkers Association at their workshop in North Melbourne.
They have various woodworking and furniture making courses as well, with very good teachers.
their website is www.vwa.org.au
If you scroll down their home page a little there is a link to the course details.
Hope this helps,

Hi Amar,
Carefully read this page,
http://www.nmit.vic.edu.au/course_in...prenticeships/
particularly the second paragraph about pre apprenticeships.
There is also a short course they run - see http://www.nmit.vic.edu.au/shortcourses/basic_carpentry
A short course would give you some basic skills and information regarding getting an apprenticeship. I'm sure the teachers would be very helpful in this respect.
The best thing to do would be to contact nmit and ask them how to apply.
Hope this helps too.
