    Default Traditional mandolin

Does anyone have any info or know of a book which has info ,details or plans on building a traditional mandolin?
A fellow woody is trying to track down such material and I thought I might try here first.

See "The Making of Stringed Instruments" by George Buchanan. ISBN:0-7134-8140-4

This book covers a lot of ground and is quite well written.

I have a copy of this book but I don't know how readily available it is. My secret desire is when my children are no longer financially dependent on me is to become an instrument maker. I also believe in Porcine aviation! )

    Hi ribot,

On Foxtel How To channel which carries a number of American DIY programs the show Handmade Music had 3 shows on Mandolin construction. The URL’s I’ve enclosed should take you directory to web pages. There is an overview of each show with some pictures and references to other web sites, hope this helps.

Now that you mention it reeves, I was passing some of the info included here to Len (preson wanting info) and he was most greatful and also mentioned that it was the old style mandolin he was wanting to make. Old style being the bowl backed type if there is any info on this type I'm sure he would be appreciative.

it's harder to find, but a book on Lute building or classic instruments would have the techniques. I think teres abook at the stewmac site.

Also the guild of american luthiers site i noted above has a discussion forum, he should ask there.

There salos some older style mados around, usually broken or warped from which to copy.

The plated lute style is probably most hassle to build and takes the right proceedures and jigs a su r laminating te strips of wood side by side.

    They alos wierder to play.

    good luck Len.

Well here's my first post and I'm actually giving advice and not asking a question................

Probably the best resource on the internet for aspiring luthiers, etc., is the Music Instrument Makers Forum...... www.mimf.com ........it is somewhat important to thoroughly read the site rules and standards before participating there as they run a well controlled BBS.
