If you can get it onto a HARDWOOD PALLETT,
    you might be able to get it cheaper;
    OR
Some might give it consideration where they wouldn't, if not Palletted.

    Just a thought

    Default Transport costs

I sell Paulownia and freight it along the East Coast from a base that is 150 klms south of Brisbane. The best price from Murwillumbah to a depot in Melbourne was $260.00 for a bundle of timber weighing 70kg on a pallet. The Murwillumbah Coy has a depot in Brisbane so the cost from Brisbane to Sydney would have been the same. If you are an account customer then the freight cost is much lower. My buyer and i tried a lot of other options without coming up with something better. Good luck

    Whitewood.

I agree with you on your last comment " Good Luck " freight is the killer of many small businesses in Australia.

I am on the Gold Coast and try to restrict my business within 150 kms. The freight costs will kill you all the time once the weight gets above 21kgs.

If anybody knows some cheaper alternatives then let us Know.

    Default Freight Costs

    Star,

I have trouble with freight because of the length of my Paulownia. Fast Ways restrict it to 2 metres and Couriers Please to 1.8 metres. However Couriers Please will carry 'parcels' up to 40 kg. The local Fast Ways operator has now deemed bundles of timer are not 'parcels' and won't pick it up.
What I did find is the costs from these two organisations vary to the same destination a great deal. I have sent 2 bunbles (under 15 kg ) of timber to Tuross Heads NSW. Fast Way charged $49.00 and Couriers Please $25.00 however to Bundaberg Fast Ways was cheaper at $13.00 compared to $20.35. I think it depends on whether they have a 'local operator' or have to use an independent contractor. To other destinations there does not much in it.
Fortunately for me the freight cost is met buy the customer but I do try to get the best deal for them

    Whitewood.

I have always used Fastways because I can send up to 25Kgs from the Gold Coast to Murwillumbah, Lismore, Casino, Kyogle for $6.80. I can also send it to Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Maryborough and to Ipswich, Gatton, and most parts of the darling Downs.

That is why I have concentrated my business in that area. When i get clients outside that range that is when the real hike happens and i have to subsidise the freight cost to keep the prices reasonable.

I will follow up on Couriers Please as previously they could not match Fastways but I suspect they may like many of the larger freight companies have mate's rates for the larger companies and screw the small operator.

I also have an interest in a product that is manufactured in Lismore and is sold in tonne lots and sent all over Queensland and New South Wales. However, because it goes under the banner of a very large company then the freight is organized by them. if I had to do it I know i would get screwd their as well.

There are other issues as well. I am assuming it is not new?
I bought a new 440 kg lathe in Brisbane. To get it moved 1000 kms to Mackay Nth Qld.,

    I found:
Couriers and transport companies are not not generally interested in a delivery to a private address.

I your case if it it is only 125kg, the lathe may be delivered to a transport depot and picked up by a local courier( some have trucks with HIABS ( hydraulic arms) which can pick up the 125kgs with ease.

Also you are on your own for insurance -too bad if they drop it- private insurance is the go.

Boxed or crated ( preferably crated as a fork lift tyne easily penetrates cardboard ) with fragile and this up signs easily seen) .

Alternately a back load with a mover may be the way to go.

    One needs to be careful
    Cheers

Border Express shifted a pallet from Brissy to Melbourne for me, weight @150 kg. Cost was $120.

I needed to get it dropped off at a business address, as the semi went straight to the freight yard and all subsequent deliveries must be to a business/commercial address.

That said, they organised delivery by smaller vehicle to my suburb, to a business address, as part of the overall price.

From the business address I needed to get it brought to my place as I don't have a ute. I went through my local timber/hardware place and paid 'mates rates'.

Border Express seem to do pricing based on both weight and size, and I found them excellent to deal with.
    Cheers,

All freight companies charge either weight or cubic charge and depending which gives the larger amount is what they charge.

We use star track and they deliver to business or homes.

Yep I'll vouch for Star Track never had a problem with them, not bad prices to.
They transported my machines from TC's in Perth to here for $350, a tablesaw jointer thicknesser and a few bits'n'piece's all up about 600kg.

    I have basically the same question; how much to send a 1.45 x 0.4 x 0.33m lathe weighing 125kgs from 3186 to 4350?

    Would be approx $130.00

Jim. At first I questioned the ability on a one off delivery to send a lathe from Melbourne to Brisbane for $110 -- $130.

The reason being in business I know what some freight companies are like to the small or one off single deliveries without a contract.

Before Christmas I was deciding which Jointer to get and Hares & Forbes quoted $100 from Brisbane to the Gold Coast about eighty Kms. Carbatec in Brisbane on a smaller Jointer were $ 40.00. I went with the smaller one because I have only myself and no help available so, if I cannot drag it myself it is of no use to me,

I looked at your Web site. so I guess you might know a thing or two. Who would you recommend?

I got a machine on a pallet sent up from Syndney to Maryborough, I think it must have weighed 200 to 250 KG and it cost $250.
Mills Transport PH-02 96817771 picked it up and droped it in Brisbane and McCalls Transport picked it up and I picked it up from him up here, but we needed a fork lift to get it of his truck so I had to go to his depot.
I do think that Mills would go to Melbourne and back.
