Default How do you make a tread like, antislip surface in wood?

I'm making a wooden step. Its a step thing that will go on a dock on a lake to help get onto a sailboat. I would like to make the steps antislip. I was thinking of cutting a crosshatch pattern into the step or something. Any suggestions?

Also, I'm using regular pine for the wood its not pressure treated, and would like to know what kind of finish I should put on it to be protected, as it will be an outdoor item frequently exposed to water.

    Thanks!

My next door neighbour swears to sumpoil for things like that.
He really soaks the timber in it. I have no idea whether it really works.
The surface of my front deck is made like this ^^^^^^^^ and we never slip on it, regardless how wet it is.
Watch out for splinters in pine though.

Granulated cork in a marine varnish finish could be the go.

I have worked around boats and wharves all my life so have some experience here. Timber on it's own will always grow weed and slime in a wet environment. There are many anti slip deck paints and other applications on the market so do a google. There will be different brand names than we have here. Mostly they are paints with a grit added to the final coat. There are stick on strips for steps a bit like sandpaper and fiberglass sheets with rough chunks of grit embedded that get screwed down over the steps. Check marine suppliers. If it is a freshwater lake then untreated pine will not last long. In the tidal zone even the best anti slip soon is covered in weed and has to be scrubbed off every few weeks to be effective.
