Treating Cedar
A few years ago I clad my old garage (now to be my wife's studio) with cedar weatherboards. They have weathered beautifully but now I wonder whether they should be treated with something to preserve them?
Would appreciate some ideas.

I used Feastwatson Woodshield on cedar weatherboards around my sunroom windows recently. They soaked up about four coats and look great.
The old boards they replaced had been there twenty years and were painted with Sikens that didn't last on the cedar.Anglewood.
Some get older and wiser, others just get older.

Depends what look you want.
If you like the silver grey look then you can safely do nothing and they will outlast you. Western Red Cedar generally will last a hundred years and more in extreme climates.
There are any number of silicon (or non-silicon) treatments that are clear, soak in, and will protect the surface and make water roll off rather than soaking in - Feast Watson and Sikkens (not the two part used for new cedar surfaces) as well as Wattyl et all have products that work. Most will need re-coating every few years.
So really up to you.

Go to a web page www.chemisys.com.au and it will have all the answers for you about timber coatings.
I have been using the product for years and it is the best by far !

If you use the sickens product make sure it's the "Sickens cetol filter 7" this is the external one , have used it with excellant results as with "wattyl exterior clear" both give a great finish and last well on western Red.
