I have read many times that the oldest tree on earth is much closer than that -- a Huon Pine in Tasmania. Similar thing though, 10,000 years plus old root system covers a wide area and has small "trees" sprout from it. It sounds like harsh environments make for long lives, though in the case of humans it probably just seems longer to endure!
