Triton Super Jaws
G'day,
I have purchased a Triton Super Jaws from Garage Sale. It is one of the older models I have checked You Tube to see how to use it. For some reason I do every thing I am supposed to do. The vice grips move towards the item. I push the foot peddle to tighten the item but it will not tighten and hold the item. So what do I need to do?? The foot peddle moves into place but will not grip the timber. There is a finger hole you can push down, If you do that it just disconnect the peddle. Is there a way of making the locking device work?
Cheers Perry

Perry just make sure when you have it working that you have you foot on the pedal when releasing your work (by hitting plate with your knee/hand). If you don't the pedal will come back and take your shin out.
Buy the way welcome to the forum.

If it's got a finger "hole" then it's not one of the old, old ones like in that video above unless the finger hole you're talking about is the one on the pedal and not the lock/unlock toggle like in the photo below:

I have 3 of the early Superjaws and each has slight variations in the mechanism, but the lock works by friction of the lock pawl on the lock shaft when you pull out the lock handle (the triangular flap). Causes of it not locking when the handle is in the out position could be a missing spring on the lock pawl, wear of the pawl or shaft, or the shaft is not connected to the pedal arm. There are variations of the shaft with split or roll pins, crimped ends, threaded nut, or circlip to hold in place on the pedal arm. I've had problems with a crimped end shaft not staying in place which I drilled to take a split pin (drilling the pedal arm was tough, the steel in these old SJA001 is incredibly hard), and problems with the pawl springs.
If the lock holds the pedal arm in the depressed position but the jaws won't hold then the drive pawl is worn or the pawl carrier spring isn't keeping the drive pawl engaged with the sliding jaw.
And remember to put your foot on the pedal before releasing to lock, these old Superjaws were known as shin busters!

Or of course the previous owner's kids (always blame the kids) could have taken it apart and no one could remember how it was supposed to go together.
