Default What should I do with trunk of a felled tree?

I recently chopped down a gum tree on my property (red gum I think) , I have chopped most of it up for firewood, however I stll have the base of the trunk (approx 1m diameter x 3m long). It has cracked a bit at the ends after 2 months but I'm not sure how deep they go. I am thinking that I might chop that up for fire wood as well but it seems a shame to waste such a large peice of wood, surely it can be used for something.s So what is the best thing to do with it, slabs, furniture, firewood something else?
PS I am not much of a woodworker myself but am happy to give most things a go if I can end up with something good at the end.

BEWARE I SEE AN ADDICTION COMING ON

No seriously firstly welcome to the forum. I suggest you search through several threads on each of your options/suggestions, that way it may become clearer to you what you would like to do with it.

Coffee table, fine furniture, bed, endless list of options,

Top dry it will take at least a year per 1 inch thick so that will give you a idea of the storage time, If you paint the ends of the log that may reduce the amount of slitting also.

As for getting it cut up - some members here cut /slab logs for cash or a share of the timber. To cut up good logs for firewood seems a bit of a shame but it is "your log"

    Hope that helps

    Cheers
    regards

    David

    Thumbs up

G'day prussell and welcome to the slippery slide.

The Calm advice is as good as it gets. You are also a lucky bugger to have access to such a 'stump".

Some woodturners would love to latch on to the root ball, if it isn't too dear.

    Cheers,

Look in the small timber milling section for someone with a mill near you and get it cut up. Where is regentville?

Don't stick the boots in guys, until we see the conditions or what the log is like, it might only be worth firewood or maybe thousands of pen blanks
