tucker vise by veritas Anyone used or own one
Just wondering if anyone has used a tucker vise by veritas??
are they sturdy when holding the piece of wood to be planed or carved just wondering what you guys think of it????
I will be in the process of making a new bench for home as i just bought a house with a big shed. i had a record quick release vise on my old bench but that is now at work.and it had no tail vise and i need it there anyway.so i will be making a new bench with a tail vise and was wondering how good the tucker vise is???? and is it as sturdy as a record vise????

I have an el-cheapo Emmert knock-off, and it's terrific. If the Tucker vice is anywhere near the quality of the rest of the Veritas product range, I wouldn't hesitate.

I often have pangs of not quite regret for not doing exactly that. At the time, I was a little nervous about importing stuff directly but Lee Valley's service is superb!
I don't usually hop on the "bag local suppliers" bandwagon but in this case the almost $1,000 mark up is ludicrous, and the reason I didn't buy one in the first place!
I'd love to hear how it goes eventually when you get it!
cheers,
P

I saw the vise in person when I was in Canada attending a furniture class, did not actually get a chance to use the vise but it appeared to be bullet proof. As for customer service, I had a small problem awhile back caused by my own stupidity , they took care of everything and then sent me a hand written letter to follow up and be sure all was good.
On a side note, when I was in Canada I had the pleasure of eating dinner with Leonard Lee, very nice person at all levels. He does not run the business any longer, currently the day to day operations are cared for by his kids, but they seem to embrace their fathers values.

well lee valley got back to very quickly....
postage is very expensive
Shipping Method Cost Shipping Timefficeffice" /><O></O>
EXPress Post $529.60 USD 8 to 10 business days<O></O>
Surface delivery $233.60 USD 8 to 12 weeks
UPS Express delivery $358.88 USD 5 or 6 business days to all major centers<O></O>
then you add th aussie dollar its at 84 cent at the moment then gst i think
you are still heaps better off about 400$$ or there abouts. plus i would prob get some other stuff as well anyway its a bit too expensive for me at the moment but one day il get one...

Brian,
Pay less than a thousand dollars on an import and GST isn't payable.
By my sums, you can have it here in eight weeks for $986.00, a whacking $712.00 SAVED!
Now you just need to work out what to buy with the money you saved!
Cheers,
P

The numbers I see are US$599 for vise + US$359 for shipping = US$958 or around A$1150 + GST 10% = A$1270 + handling fees + (is there any duty?) + shipping to Alice Springs A$?. So cheaper than Mik, but their pricing is outrageous.
I purchased an unused Tucker on eBay recently for A$500, no shipping as item was located close by. Have not yet installed it, but looks good - and not difficult to install. I am supposed to be virtually retired but am working full-time on projects (will help to pay for son's wedding in Chicago in September) so lacking time for woodworking. I would not have purchased one except it became available at not _too_ bad a price; I have a few metal vises to install as a 2nd vise on my bench.

that price was quoted to send to alice so no additional shipping...
dam you so lucky to get it for that price who wanted to get rid of that????if you ever come across another one let me know.
i just cant justify that amount of money 1100 on a vise at the moment when im still just getting set up here only been here 6 months and still on the never ending shoping list of tools i need for work goes on. so 1100 on a vise for home use cant do it. but as you said for that price cant go wrong i would have bought it for 500. well done let me know how it goes when its installed or if you dont want it i take it off your hands........ as i travel to sydney to see family

be aware that while your credit card may be charged at today's or tomorrow's exchange rate, customs will use the AUD : USD rate applicable on the day the import arrives.
If your close to the intervention limit, a slight change in the rate could push you over.
BTW
USD$958 is AUD$1131 as of now (using 0.8469)
plus 3% Duty (I think it's 3%, but it might be 5% because it's shipped from Canada) AUD$34
plus 10% GST (on the total) AUD$116.5
Total AUD$1281
still a respectable saving compared to shopping locally and even greater if you select the least cost shipping method
ALSO
be aware that the USPS accepts heavier (and larger) packages than does Aust Post.
with really heavy or long items it pays to check the USPS and AustPost web sites to ensure that it can be delivered here
If you end up having to use UPS be aware that if customs fees apply, you'll almost certainly be stung with UPS's $200(?) "brokerage" fee.

Ian,
Thanks for that. My understanding though is that it is the cost of the goods, not cost including freight that's calculated?
If that's correct, it means it's pretty safely below $1,000, notwithstanding the other UPS issues etc.
Cheers,
P

the two occasions where GST has been assessed on my imports it was calculated on the cost of goods + postage
