Default What is this type of hinge called, please?

Hi ) The object I'm looking for is a version of concealed hinge for lightweight, small (approx. 45cm square) hollow-ish cabinet doors.

We bought the wall-units second hand. They're great. Think all the components came from Ikea originally.

(The 'wood' used is a laminate back and front. The 'insides' are a sort of light chip-wood, compressed stuff. Not suitable for normal hinges.)

Some of the small (approx.45cm square) doors are already installed. We have extra material to make more. We want to install several more of these small square doors.

What we need are some hinge things similar to those on the already installed doors. I don't know where to find them, here in Sydney.

I've looked on internet and they 'might' be called pivot-hinges. But I don't know for sure and no-one seems to know what I'm talking about when I phone them.

So -- here is a description of what we're looking for, based on the hinges that were already installed on existing doors when we bought the unit.

The hinge consists first of a small black round thing that fits into a hole that you have to make in the shelves above and below where the door is intended to fit.

The small black round thing looks a bit like a tiny plastic top-hat. You push that into the holes you've made.

The hinge part is a metal piece with two screw holes in it. It's about 5cms long. At the end (which bends over at a right angle and sits on the top or bottom edge of the door) it has a short ( 1 cm approx) projection that fits into the little top-hat things that are inside the holes you've made in the wood above and below the intended door. You attach (via two screws) the 5cm metal thing onto the inside of the door ; one at the top of the door and one at the bottom.

When installed, these hinges enable the small, light-weight doors to swing open and shut smoothly and evenly.

From the front, when looking at the wall unit, all you can see are the small flat-fronted doors, sitting precisely inside their individual cavities. No part of the hinge shows. It's very neat in appearance.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about and can anyone tell me the name of this sort of hinge and if possible where they can be purchased in Sydney, please?

Any assistance would really be appreciated. Thank you )

Your description sounds a little like a product called "pivot hinges" by McMaster-Carr. Granted, that might just be a Murrican term, but it might give a name to ask for locally. There might be a picture at http://www.mcmaster.com (I only checked my printed old catalog), which you could bring with you.

The one you're after is on page 456 of the link that Craig gave you. It's called a "Simplex Wood Door Hinge". It's a variant of the glass door hinge, so that's why it's listed under glass door hinges.

    Something like these:

    I call them European hinges.

The Ikea ones use a smaller socket than most.

Ikea sells the hinges separately - it is probably best to buy them from Ikea if you want to match what you already have.

Some Bunnings stores stock the Blum.
