    Default Outdoor Table Tennis Table

If you were trying to make an outdoor tennis table - under a verandah and it could double as an outdoor dining table - would you use plywood, solid timber or something else?

A big challenge here is the cost and the actual size of the table top. Keeping a solid timber table flat could be tricky at the size it needs to be. With the cost, you can buy a table from BigW for $100. A sheet of Marine ply is around the $200 mark and solid timber will cost approx $300-400 (recycled Oregon beams)

    Thoughts?

My thoughts go on the line of building a table tennis table top that will fit over an existing outdoor table. When not in use it gets folder up and put to one side.

Now this brings up another thought, could you not purchase a second hand table tennis table, one that folds up, remove the fold up legs and then you only have to align to the existing outdoor table.

Yep... Marine ply is expensive (and heavy) but I think that whatever solid timber you use may cup enough to create a challenging ping pong game.

Perhaps 12mm marine ply with several on-edge cross braces glued under the surface may work

waterproof Masonite would be ideal if it were available, ot could be made

    regards

We use a sheet of Formply for lunchtime pong ant work. It sits outside fully exposed to the elements with a small scrap taking place of the net. It also comes black faced for good ball contrast. Bear in mind that a standard sheet of ply is smaller than a regulation table. But it has survived for a 6 months so far. If you were to fold it up it would store quite well.

As stated above standard ply is not the correct size for Table tennis. I'd suggest making a top to go on top of the outdoor table that is removable. Or buy a 2nd hand table tennis table and remove all the legs etc and just brace the underside. Then you just remove the two halves from the outdoor table when you want to keep it stored aside. Could even Piano hinge the two halves together. Several options but my last option would be to make the table and table tennis top one in the same thing exposed to the elements.

Formply will be strong and smooth enough.
