Default Unsure how to begin with a simple DIY

G'day, I just need some info on what tools I should use, specifically I have quite a thick desk which my new Monitor arm mount Clamp will not fit with,

I'd like to thin out or cut a section of the desk, in the middle rear of the desk, for the bracket to sit correctly, and clear the width.

I was looking at using a router or Planer, is this the right way to go about it? I noticed that the Router / Planer, are mainly used for Lines and not cutting "half" or thinning a larger rectangle section out of the wood.

Quite hard to explain / google what the correct procedure would be.

    Cheers, Ben

    Hi Ben,

We would be able to give you the best answer if you could post, or provide a link to your monitor arm's clamp to give a better idea of what the recess needs to look like.

    Option 1.
A low cost option if you already own a drill, and if the under part's foot of the clamp not very large, you could look at using a forstner bit in a drill.

    Option 2.
Using a power router to recess the required area with a flat bottomed bit will do the job very well, and is a common use for routers. Do a YouTube search for "recessing with a router" and you'll get plenty of inspiration.

    Option 3.
Use a chisel and hammer. Again, YouTube searches for "recessing hinge with a chisel" will point you in the right direction.

Another option, which may, or may not, be feasible, would be to screw a length of a suitable sized timber to the bottom of the desk, projecting the required length. This would alleviate the need to permanently damage the desk.

With out sounding condescending are you sure the desk is made from a solid material, some cheaper desks are made from hollow core materials?
