Default urethrane - should I sand it

    Hi again,
Having sanded back my (maple) stairs - as best as I could - I have just done what the guy who did my timber floors suggested and put a coat of urethrane timber seal (http://www.urethanecoatings.com.au/s...timberseal.php) on. He suggested this, followed by 2 coats of gloss...which is just what he did on the floors. (I'm using his leftovers.)
And now I'm thinking perhaps I should have asked more questions. Though it was tricky at the time because though he was charming, he spoke very little English.
In my ignorance I assumed that this two stage process was like the one I've been through on the new cedar doors - ie an oil and a varnish.
But no. Now, I've looked around online for info on urethrane - I now realise it is a sealer.
So, not only has it done nothing to mask the imperfections in the stairs...like some faint ingrained paint...and some putty in a repair...if anything it has accentuated them.
And...and I'm only guessing here, now that I've put it on, I presume that short of resanding it all off again, there's no point trying to put in an oil with a light stain in to try and cover the faint paint and the putty.
Has anyone got any suggestions as to what I might do next.
(Short of remind me that the tortoise always beats the hare!)
    Thank you
    Peter

I am not absolutely sure but I think I read somewhere that you can put a coloured stain of some kind into the polyurethane

I'd try using an artists brush and oil colours and paint the odd spots out then recoat the whole lot with some more poly.

If all you want to do is add a tint to the finished result there is nothing wrong with tinting further coats of Urethane to get the look you want.
