    Default Vac recommendations please

    Hi all

Still doing my Baby on a Budget thing haha.

After years of having no form of dust extraction in the shed, I have become a little tired of wading through legions of wood shavings on my shed floor through routering, table sawing, bandsawing, etc.

So I was thinking I might start small with some portable dust extraction to attach to my various machines.

I have a spare plastic container with lid, so I though I might buy one of these...
Anti-Static Dust Deputy DIY Cyclone Separator | Oneida Air Systems

    ...and a 2hp (2000 watt) vac.

But for the life of me I can't seem to find one that gets good reviews and is reasonably priced. Is the Ozito one from Bunnings any good - it is only 1250 watts, but it is also only $50.

Any other recommendations? I don't really want to spend much more than $150 on it at most.

Thanks in advance for any help / advice

$150 is not going to buy you much of anything useful, so you might as well go for the cheapest option.

    Good dust extraction is expensive.

If you're going the small cyclone and shop vac. route buy one of these - Cyclone Filter Dust Collector Woodworking For Vacuums Dust Extractor Separator | eBay - a much newer, more efficient design than the Onieda, and much cheaper to. They are available from a number of sellers on eBay, Aliexpress and Banggood, including some local sellers. The model that you want is the SN50T3.

It doesn't matter much what vac. you use, although something with a decent level of filtration for the finest dust would be best unless you are looking at locating the vac. outside the shed. Even quality domestic vac's work well with these cyclones. The best collection containers for mounting the cyclone are 15 or 20 litre ring lock drums. The rubbish bin at your local vacuum cleaner specialist is a veritable treasure trove of hoses and fittings. I even got a few operating high end domestic vac's from a bin, one of which I use in my own shed.

Anyone wading through sawdust probably needs more than a vacuum cleaner or small DC, and unfortunately more than $150 to solve this problem.
Suggest starting by reading around in the dust forum and developing some questions to ask for further feedback.

Maybe this is additional excuse to visit my set up its far from perfect but it will give you lots of ideas of what can be done.

The cheapest L class vacuum is probably this Makita. it is $349 though.

I've got a 20L Shop Vac connected to the cyclone Aldav linked using high efficieny shop vac bags (the're yellow colored) and a HEPA filter. Without the HEPA filter and bag you can smell the dust being ejected out the vacuum exhaust. The bag is essentially there to provide another layer of filtration, I haven't changed it in year. This setup will still cost more than $150. If you don't get a cyclone, be aware that the shop vac design means that a 20L vac probably only has 10L or so of usable storage.

The 40L Shop Vac with the power outlet claims L class for about $230. Bought one a few weeks back and I'm happy with it for the price so far, having it kick on when I start using the outlet is a great feature especially when sanding. Actually used it to sand a cheese board in my living room with my Mirka and the two combined did a fantastic job picking up all but a tiny amount of dust.

I built this using a cheapo cyclone from eBay and ryobi from bunnings.

works really well and is mobile to move around my shed.

since then I’ve added French cleats to the side to hold sandpaper and my sanders
