So, about veneer.
Hello there. In the last month I have acquired a rather large quantity of veneer of various species, sizes and figure - which is lovely stuff to have. However, due to forthcoming financial prospects, I may need to sell off some or all of my beloved veneer to help the piggy bank get back into the black. The problem I have with this is: I don't know enough about veneer to do this successfully. This is why I have come to the forum for help. I would love to know the opinions of forum members regarding the following:
- Do you think veneer has a potential selling market within these forums?
- What properties of veneer contribute to it's value and saleability (species, grain figure, size of sheets etc)?
- Are the users of this forum interested in veneer for doing large panels or for marquetry work - question relates to size of sheets and post-ability.
- If you are a consumer/user of veneer, what price do you expect to pay for a given size of veneer?
- Do you know of - or are - the sort of person interested in purchasing a quantity of veneer? (If yes I'd like to hear a PM from you )
I know some of these questions sounds menial, but they are the sort of things I need to know to justify trying to sell this stuff or whether I would be grabbing at straws trying to sell it - in which case I would grit my teeth and bear the lack of money and enjoy having and using the veneer until the day I die.
I am still in the process of sorting it out and organizing it in the shed - cataloging each lot as I go. I will post pictures and a full list of species when finished if that helps. There isn't any overly common timbers among the lot, apart from half a dozen sheets of Radiata Pine (why would they bother?) and some Silky Oak.
I appreciate any input regarding this. Thanks in advance.
Tom.

I'm not sure about in Australia but here in the UK veneer can be expensive if your buying it in small quantities. The species of timber and grain obviously affect the price, as does the quality and thickness. ie if there is lots of checking and splits then the price will be significantly reduced.
Usually over here veneer is priced by a square ft, for example brown oak is usually anywhere between 20p and 50p per square foot if you buy a bundle or around £15 per 10ft by 1ft leaf if you buy single leaves.
Figured and burr timbers can be more expensive as they are more desirable for fine work and are not always as easy to find due to the sizes of them.
Postage isn't a huge problem as veneer isn't very heavy unless its a huge amount and long leaves can be rolled and put into boxes fairly safely.
I would be interested in seeing a list of what timbers you have as I am always looking for veneer, but delivering to me could be problem.

Have a look at veneer sales on ebay for a guide.
