    Default Veneering Question

    If I were veneering a small box with mitred edges would using a simple butt joint on the substrate (probably something stable like 16mm MDF) be acceptable? or do should the substrate match the veneer to minimise the effects of movement?

    Attached is a basic pic show the type of look i am after...

    Go the mdf.

    The mdf has minimal movement, in fact you can consider it zero.
    If you're using standard 0.6mm veneer then once its stuck down to the substrate then movement isnt an issue with the veneer either.

    Veneer and mdf are made to go together. Using a real timber substrate throws in all sort of potential risks.

    The mitred corners will be weak though, so will need reinforcing.
