Veneers
Hi guys, my name is Stewart and I am a newbie. My main interest is woodworking with recycled timber (and everything else). I will post some photos of my stuff if possible. I have just discovered this wonderland of information and I am bursting with questions (and answers if I can). I live in the south west of WA and have access to unlimited amounts of wonderful wood, jarrah, marri, she-oak, woody pear, tuart and I do mean unlimited. It just lies around here just waiting to be picked up or burnt (tragedy). What I would like to do is make some veneer. I have a thicknesser and will be getting a bandsaw for my 60th in Oct, (some fast talking required there!) How do I mount the log to the bandsaw to cut accurately, which bandsaw $5-600 is the budget. About 10 inch throat I thought. Do I fasten the veneer to the job then plane or can I put it through the thicknesser at 2 mm thick. Etc etc.
thanks in anticipation

Hi Stewart!
Firstly, welcome to the forum, aka nut-house
My first suggestion to you is do some searches on resawing, bandsaws, veneering, etc. There's heaps of info here. Then, when you have some more specific questions, ask away!
Cheers!

re the bandsaw question... Im guessin youve made the acquaintance of the boys at PMTS in Bunbury right? (theyre the ones with the Jet gear)... have you looked through the Carbetec or Hare & Forbes cattledogs online? (oooh okay then theres also Timbercon ) do a bit of research BEFORE you buy okay thats a good warning!! dont just accept the cheepest or the closest shop to you go have a good gander around... also remember the Quokka sometimes theres good buys in that magazine (every Thursday)
Search the forum for "resaw" or "resawing" and you will find this questions been asked a fair bit and blokes often put up their pics of their resaw setup... there was a REALLY good one posted a few months back that Im going to "copy"
As for putting a 2mm veneer through the thicknesser FUGGEDABOUDIT!!... to thickness a veneer hot glue it to another peice say longer and an inch thick this gives the machine something to munch eerrr work with and send it through... no matter which thicknesser you have it will have an upper and lower limit it can thickness 2mm would be beyond any that I know of in the woodbutchers selection
Theres a few bods here from Bunbury and surrounds and no doubt they'll say gidday in a short while
Welcome aboard Stewie mate!
PS... Theres this requirement mate you gotta fullfill it BY your third post okay? just a warning okay these blokes and sheilas sorta tend to loose their wigs and go totally troppo if you dont do it... But Im a nice bloke so Im warnin yer okay POST some pics REAL soon okay?? Pics are good!!Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!
