Default Do you want some Veritas Kit a bit cheaper than normal?

(Mods - please move/delete if this violates anything...)

    Gentlemen,

I'm en route home from Canada tomorrow. I have pre loaded my gps for a drive-by shop at the Calgary Lee Valley store...

As an example, the skew block plane is $439 (AUD) at Carbatec, and CAD $279 in Calgary... (both with PVM blade). That's about AUD $315. A roughly 25% saving.

I have a bit of spare weight allowance. Accordingly, on a first come first served basis, I'm happy to buy up to 3 or 4 people's requests and bring them back with me, depending on weight/bulk etc.

    The 'small print':

    1. I will pay up front, and will keep receipts. I expect a respectful mutual acknowledgement that exchange rates etc fluctuate, so I'm not going to bugger about: you will transfer me the cost of purchase in Aud according to my Commonwealth bank statement, plus postage.
    2. I will only take 'orders' from forum members with at least 20 posts under their belt - at my discretion. I'm not going to deal with complete unknowns who then back out and leave me out of pocket.
    3. First come, first in line. If they're out of stock, I'll move to the next.
    4. Please be sensible - I don't really want to carry a number eight jointer or a 3 foot long pole of some sort - I'm thinking marking gauges, block planes etc...

It won't save a huge amount, but it'll be cheaper than Carbatec, and they look to have good stock availability atm. (go online and have a look at the Calgary store - they show 'in store' availability on each item.)

Shout if you're interested! I land in Brisbane on the 2nd, and will post within the week.

Heck yes please; and I accept your full terms and conditions!

Veritas saw file holder 05G4601 $47.90
    Long Life 2m folding rule 24N0653 $16.95

Comes to around $220AUD plus postage; happy to transfer that over as a deposit now if you like and finalise when you get the full bill and postage costs.

No sweat Chief- keep the cash until we have an agreed final amount with postage - it'll be simpler. Also allows for any 'funnies' in store if we're beaten to the punch by a mad Canadian rush for some reason(!) I'll let you know asap once I've got there and grabbed what's available...

    That’s great;

If no-one else takes up your offer I’d like to add another little thing:

Scraper plane toothed blade 05P2904 $39.50

    Cheers!

    What an absolutely fantastic offer,

But I went looking, then I looked at my wife, then I went looking again of course, just too be sure, for quite a long time, then I googled divorce lawyers,
Then took one more look at my wife, an went played with the Dog.
I’m so gutless, I feel shameful.

    Default Veritas

    That's an amazing offer.

I have a Veritas concave spokeshave, and would love a Veritas Round Spokeshave, PM-V11 @ $144 Canadian Dollars.

If there is still room and you can fit one in I would be most grateful.

Bugga, I would have gotten a shooting sander 05Z1501, 8 inch, but it is out of stock in the Calgary store until at least the 9th Feb.
    Thanks for the fantastic opportunity.

Very generous offer but naturally since I'm only 20 minutes from a LV store wouldn't be of use to me.

I will say though that if the OP has a few days before going to the LV store in Calgary he can contact them by phone and preorder the tools he wants and if it isn't in stock they can get it from one of the other stores that do have it. They won't charge for the service if they can accommodate the order in time. You have to prepay and the order will be ready when you arrive at the Express counter.

The other thing I was wondering is what is your duty/tax free limit when returning home? If I come back after a week I have an $800 exemption. Over that I have to pay the tax etc. How will you apply those fees if you are over the limits?

    Pete,

The duty one is a good point: I'm assuming that it's a non-issue, as this will be tax-paid purchases. If it raises its ugly head, I'll share the pain according to individual quantity. It'll dent people's margin, but we should still be ahead of the game... If that changes anyone's desire, shout asap! I shall present myself as a poor itinerant journeyman carpenter!

OK - bids now closed, as I'm about to get 2 females on the road for a fun 24 hrs of intercontinental travel...
John and Chief, you're both in the frame for all your requests - will update on success as and when I can.

The Australian dutiable goods threshold for adults coming home is $900, I don't think the tax paid overseas is a consideration, but you can probably get your Canadian tax paid refunded as your depart similar to our TRS.

Thanks Fuzzie - the total is well be low our family duty free allowance, so no Aus tax issues.

Quick report on the shopping trip:

Chief: got everything except the saw file holder. Their system showed one in stock, but they couldn't find it(!).

John: I got you a round veritas spokeshave, PVM steel, but the price was CAD $169, not $144... I and the helpful assistant scanned the catalogue, and she even went into the system to check that the price hadn't been hiked overnight - we couldn't find one at $144. If you don't want it at this price, I'll either keep it or put it up for sale on the forum - it's still considerably cheaper than the Carbatec price, but I don't want you to feel bounced, so let me know if you still want it - I'll wait before doing anything else.

For both, the less good news is that I was unaware that, unlike Aus, the catalogue prices are all ex GST. The great news is that Alberta GST is a measly 5%! I'll detail all the splits when I get home and work out what you owe me - but again, you're still well ahead.

For an Australian, it was weird going into a shop selling woodworking tools alongside gardening and cooking kit - I can only assume someone figured that wives would be more likely to let their husbands shop there if they came home with such implements...

If I have the location of this offer "right", jpdv will be shopping at the Vancouver store, not the store in Calgary.

Thanks Ian, but a moot point as the boat has sailed.
However, Carbatec now have these in stock.....
So I've bought one from them and along with other stuff in my order, got free postage.
I hope it'll not be a other dust collecting tool

I will still take the spokeshave. The price I referred to was the Calgary store price when I logged in, but no worries.

    Thanks so much.
