    Good luck

Replacing the motor with single phase unit will not devalue the unit especialy if you store the old one on a shelf for the day if you if you decide to sell the unit

China while agree that switching most likely would not devalue the drill press if I keep the motor.

However the VFD would be cheaper, a motor would cost me $275 OR more. With the VFD I will just get a knowledgeable friend to do the electrics for me. Also the ability to adjust the speed simple with the VFD is an attractive feature.

I had a look at the drill press today. The spindle seemed solid, I think it has about 0.1mm play at the most in it. I could push it a touch however it felt good. I drill a hole using an 11mm drill bit and I got an 11mm hole using the vernier. So it seems to drill true. It also runs nice and quiet, no rattling, grinding or thumbing sounds.

So I have agreed to purchased the machine. The guy said if I pay cash I can get it for $390.

Next I have to find a way of transporting the bugger, Mentone to Coburg.

    Looking for a suitable VFD.

A search of the forum threads has shown that Powtran is recommend this one seems to be a good match for my machine.

Danfoss is another good recommend brand - there are two used Danfoss for sale at the moment:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Danfoss-F...item3aa9e4abef

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Danfoss-F...item3aa9e4ab82

Would either of the the Danfoss suit my motor?

Here the details on the motor:

    0.5 HP
    400/440 V
    1.3 A
    50 C/S
    1424 RPM
    Class E Insul
    Cont. Rating

Sorry for my dim whited questions.

I am going to rope in a friend who is a more electric focused to rewire the motor for me.

Those are 3phase to 3Phase VFD, you want single phase to 3phase.

Also 1-1000Hz is overkill. you just need 0 - 200 Hz.

Are you sure it would need re-wiring? Have you taken the plate off the connection box?

I am no expert, but have a number of 3phase machines and loose motors and the ones that I have had cause to open up have had the ability to connect the incoming power as either star or delta.

    Cheers,
    Paul

If it was a dual V dual connect motor it would almost certainly state this on the name plate.
Sometimes the start point is accessible at the connection box but that is not that common.

As a for-example ... and I don't know what the answer is ... just looking at the first one I could access easily ...

It doesn't mention star or delta ... but having the 6 terminals was how the motors looked that did give a diagram for wiring the two different ways.

Thats an example of a motor with an accessible star common point.

I know I am going to sound like a heretic, please be gentle. Sounds like you want a working drill press to use in your regular woodworking and not a restoration project. Please correct me if I am wrong. If so, to me the numbers don't add up. Brand new, from Carbatec and others, machines to suit your needs are available for similar money to what you look like you will have to pay out. I know the arguments for Aussie versus Taiwanese and Chinese. If your interest is more the pleasure in a restoration, go for it. If you simply want to drill holes in wood with a minimum of fuss, I suggest new is the way to go. Cheers.

Sorry, missed the post where you said that you had already bought it. Good luck with your project.

If I can buy a quality used machine for the same money as a cheap new machine I know which one I'd choose.
