    Default Wardrobe with TV Insert

    Greetings all,

As part of our ongoing renovations, after receiving quotes between $4000 - $7000 for a built in wardrobe, SWMBO has decided that I can build it myself

As we have 12 foot ceilings, I will be starting off with the fake wall look around it, complete with cornice and architraves, and may or may not just buy the inserts etc.

The main difficulty I am having revolves around the centre of the wardrobe where we want to mount a 76cm Television, not sure of it's weight sorry, but is a fairly new one.

Can anybody offer any suggestions as to timber supports I would be advised to use etc? I intend to build this part first, then purchase the inserts etc to fit around it.

    Thanks,

    Kev

Already have a 50" Pioneer Plasma in the lounge and don't think I can talk the wife into spending more money on an LCD unfortunately. That savings is already spent on architraves, skirting, paint, plantation shutters, doors, windows etc etc etc

mmmm plasma....still working on SWMBO for my plasma...it will happen...

I have about a 55-60 cm CRT sitting on a sheet of 6mm ply surrounded by 2 by 1 and it never even looks like moving, admittedly the distance accross the base is probably only about 600mm so if you were to run some of your 19mm melamine (assuming that is the wardrobe material) over some 2 by 1 it should be fine.

Worst case, it falls...it breaks...then you get the LCD!!

    cheers,
    elm.

If you want to be sure about the TV not moving, or sagging the platform and perhaps pulling in the surrounding wardrobe walls, then make a torsion box. Easy to do, light and very very stiff. See http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...rtainment+unit for an entertainment unit I built a while ago.

    Hi Alex,

Any chance you might be able to post some WIP pictures? I've just decided it's time for me to renovate the bedroom and put in a floor to ceiling built-in wardrobe/storage area with a window seat, so I'd be very appreciative of your journey.

    cheers
    Wendy

About 30 years ago when we moved into our place (without any wardrobes) I hastily built a chipboard, crapita and louvre doored 15 ft long wall of wardrobes/cupboards in our bedroom. Painted white they didn't look too bad at the time. The cupboards are about 10 ft (13 ft ceilings) high split into 2 levels. The lower level is 6.5 ft high and is a mix of hanging space and shelves/drawers. The upper level is about 3.5 ft high and is used for storage. Last year we put a 26" LCD TV inside one of the cupboards on the upper level (I was actually surprised at how heavy they are, about as heavy as a 24" TV !). The shelf (successfully) holding this shelf is part of the cupboard is made of 12 mm chipboard in a 3" x 2" crapiata frame.

The fortuitous benefit of this set up is
    a) With the TV up at that height you can watch it laying down or propped up in bed with pillows.
    b) when you don't want to see the TV screen you can shut the cupboard door on it.

I hardly ever watch it but SWMBO thinks it is the ant pants.

Thanks again all for the advice and comments.

Wendy, did you mean pictures of the bedroom renovations, or just the wardrobe? I won't be starting the wardrobe for a couple of weeks until after the carpeting has been done, and now my wife has changed her mind and decided against having them go all the way to the ceiling once I explained we would have to move the downlights and ceiling fan again. That plus the fact that a wall to ceiling will make the bedroom look that much smaller too.

    Cheers,

    Kev
