    Default waterproof mdf

Help!! We would like to erect a notice board on the fence outside our creative arts centre, to post up coming workshops etc. We initially thought marine ply with blackboard paint, only the marine ply is too expensive... will waterproof mdf do the job and if so where do we get it? and does it go by any other name?

Is there any tips anyone can gives us on how to go about this project. Thank you
    kind regards Terri

Hi Terri, welcome to the forum.
I've used masonite for an outdoor sign. Still OK after about 15 years.
Give it a good paint first, make sure the edges are well covered.

There is a board product that is pacifically made for this purpose, it looks like a cross between mdf and masonite. I dont know what its called... signboard maybe?
A quick google and it is indeed called signboard!

Buy some Weathertex sheet at a timber yard. It is often used for signs and should last OK. MR MDF will not last very well. Weathertex is made with the original masonite process using durable australian hardwood. The plant is at Raymond Terrace. No relation or commercial association.

Use plain old MDF and paint it with any water based paint. Ensure you give it two coats ALL over including the edges. If you want it really waterproof, then paint it three times to make sure it is completely sealed. Then paint your black board paint in the area you want to write on.

    Works great.

    Default ourdoor sign board material

    Hi Nimue,

Don't give yourself grief. Use cement board. It's an outdoor product and its cheap as you want.

I don't think there is a "Waterproof" MDF. It's called "Moisture Resistant" ie MR MDF.

I'd go with what Old Pete said eg Hardiflex, Versulux etc, ya wouldn't even have to paint it.

Want something cheap, light and only cost dollars? Use coreflute, it is the choice of sign writers.

Coreflute is cheap but must be considered temporary when used outdoors

Dunno about that. Most real estate signs are made of it and seem to show no sign of weathering. We use it for lightweight & very cheap containers in an industrial situation and it seems to have an excellent life span there also. My son flies planes made of it and they cost BA to make. It has to be the most versatile board material I know of.
