    Default waterproof ply?

    HI,

My partner works with disabled children and has bought home a 'bath step' for me to modify.

Its very similar to those old person shower chairs plasstic coated metal frame and a plastic seat top. This one is designed to sit in the bath and act as a step to help the kid get in and out.

The chalenge is that the edge of the bath is a concave curve and the plastic top is rectangular. What I need to do is put a new top on the existing frame and shape it so that it fits snugly against the side of the bath.

What should I make the top out of considering that it will be immersed in water a lot? I'm thinking that marine ply about 1cm thick will be the go?

    Any suggestions/advice?

    Thanks

Plywood is great stuff but it does have its limitations.

The waterproof bit is the glue used to bond the laminates & thats fine but the timber it is made of is still the sameas it was however it is usualy rotary sliced veneer which is full of open grain and microscopic cracks.

this means without very thourough treatment you will have durability problems.

I've made a couple of bath boards in the past, the first plywood lasted all right for a while but started to show signs of problems.

Mk 2 was made out of merbau decking which held up very well for many years... even that is now showing some signs of fingal atack inspite of several coats of poly.

water is one thing, warm water, soaps & detergents well thats an other thing again.

I'd be looking at one of the high water durable hardwoods, then finish it well.
realy thin the first coat so it soaks in
    cheers

    Most powertools have sharp teeth.
    People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.
