waxed wood
Hi everyone
I hope this is in the right section. It's a rather naive question, but here goes.
We have bought a number of blocks at woodworking shows that are covered with what looks to be a thick wax. How do you treat it to get rid of the wax, to use the timber.
I have a couple of very small narrow pieces of exotic wood that I bought for detail on intarsia, so I can't afford to waste any.
Cheers

Nope, it's a good question.
The wax is usually put there to slow the moisture loss from the end grain of green timber, and to allow the wood to season slowly.
if the wood is seasoned to your satifaction, scrape most of it off with a knife and the rest can be dissolved by wiping with turps or white spirits
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

Hi Underfoot
Thanks so much for your quick response. I thought it had to be something fairly straightforward. This helps a lot
