Thread: WB's Shed has finally started

I'll let it go for as long as possible maybe a week? I am open to advise.
It has taken some time to get the shed to this stage and I did everything to the best quality I could afford (no shortcuts) so waiting for the concrete to cure properly before applying the epoxy will be consistent with everything else.
I think the 2 pack I am getting is clear. I'm not worried about the colour as I don't expect to be spending too much time looking at the floor.
I am glad I poured the slab inside the shed.- Wood Borer

I wouldn't have thought that a week was enough. There is a lot of water in that slab which has to go somewhere. It can't go out through the bottom as there is a plastic barrier there, if you then also block off the top it will have to go somewhere. What normally happens then, the water pressure will blow off the topcoat.
As I see it you have 2 options, you can wait longer, time will depend on weather conditions, or you can go for a water based clear floor sealer. That wouldn't be as hard wearing as the 2 pack epoxy, but on the plus side would be easier to re-apply when the time comes.
If you go ahead with the clear 2 pack epoxy, I would ask the manufacturer for his recommendations re time to wait after slab was poured, after all, he would know best.
Just a thought, some of the clear sealers they put over the patterned concrete on driveways (I think they are water based) are very hard wearing and normalyy applied very soon after the driveway has been put down.

From what I've heard for epoxy coatings, you need to tape(fully seal)down a piece of plastic and check it after 24hrs for moisture... no moisture means its ready.
I reckon it will be several weeks if not months to cure fully... obviously it will depend on the climate of the area, it wouldn't take long here!....................................................................

Thanks for the advice Big Shed and Harry.
I think will I adjust my plans .
I will move the gear into the shed for a couple of months so I can start using the shed and then put the epoxy on when it is really dry. I will do one half at a time, stacking the benches etc in the other half.
I have to because a bloke will be setting up my new machines in late November or early December as he is in Victoria at that time. It will save me paying for his airfares and travel costs from Sydney.
The air is generally fairly dry up here but it is a bit cooler than other parts.
I was thinking of bringing the slab to Harry's to dry it out but then I remembered that every time I go to Port Pirie I get held up by that train shunting back and forwards near the wharf - it takes forever so I wont.- Wood Borer

You shouldn't try to move a slab til it is properly dry either, it will crack.

I was not informed of this either verbally or in writing by the concreter - have I got a legal case?
Here I was figuring out how to put the slab and shed on the back of the Hilux to take it to Port Pirie to dry it out in Harry72's paddock and now this sombre news from Cliff.- Wood Borer

plenty of trees around why not lite a fire in the shed

I love your thinking however just a couple of little hiccups.
1: Bushfires in Tolmie
2: Fire restrictions come in at 1AM this coming Monday and I am a member of the local brigade.
3: We had 40mm of rain overnight so the fire would either smoke and change the colour of the shed or it wouldn't catch. With the cost of petrol these days ....
Thanks for the suggestion though- Wood Borer

I would also recommend that you do not use your Hilux to shift the shed/slab to Port Pirie ...
The locals at Port Pirie like to use Hiluxes for homes.Cliff.

Rob,
You need a Hilux to move a slab? My slabs only have 24 in them, 30 at best.

Yeah a few gypsy's around my way... they like Hilux's!
WB You'd need not worry about the shunting trains anymore, most of our ore/concentrates come by boat. Still get the occasional train tho.
You can bring your shed and its slab if you want, it can be my shed's little brother.....................................................................

This only has only14 in it - metres of concrete that is!
Getting down the hills I'm not worried about Harry it is getting it back up!
Maybe I will drop in next time to check out your big shed when I'm over that way on the way to Birdsville or the desert via the Oodnadatta and you can check out my small shed when you are up this way - We'll even put you up for a night or two.
We've seen enough fires for a while Hutch - the last one lasted 69 days.- Wood Borer

I reckon I will be basically up and going before Christmas.
I have to catch up on a backload of work plus make shelves, cupboards, workbenches etc which will be an ongoing project.
We look forward to you coming down for a visit.- Wood Borer
