    Default WD40 for Tool Storage

Is WD40 a good choice of oil for planes, chisels, saw blades etc. for short-term storage between uses?

Camellia Oil is absolutely the go Steve. It forms a dry gel after a couple of days so that the tools are not slippery when handled. It's reasonably expensive, but like Vegemite and Brylcreem...a little dab 'l do ya! It's cheaper from Tools in Japan, but only if you buy other stuff to spread the freight around. Because it dries it doesn't come off onto the timber to interfere with any finish you might apply.

I keep a bumroll in the shed and just squirt a tiny amount on and wipe over the tool.

Excellent. Thanks, and for the link too. This is exactly what I was after. I posted because of my concern that WD40 would need to be removed before using the tools - a PITA.

I already have an order pending from Carbatec, a scraper on back-order, so can probably get the Camellia Oil sent with it. I've spent so much on this new hobby over the last few weeks that $24 for Camellia Oil is nothing. Better than rusty tools.

As mentioned WD40 would not be the best for storage of tools, especially if it goes oft a longer term.

Personally I have used Camilla oil from your supermarket stores and now using G15 for long term storage.

Camelia oil is good, this is true. But it does go rancid and smelly. I prefer lanolin based products such as Lanotec. Particularly for short to medium term protection. Longer term protection on bigger pieces of equip I give a couple of coats over a day and wrap with baking paper ( grease proof paper ). Wipes off easy with a bit of white spirit. With user tools I don't worry about wiping off. Hasn't affected finishing for me as yet.

    Hi Christos,

    What's G15?
I'm in the process of stocking up on tools and need to start thinking about protecting them.

    Cheers

I ordered some Camellia Oil from Carbatec earlier, but I'll have to look into G15 for longer-term storage.

    Thanks for the replies, guys.

I keep a piece of felt in a small screw top jar and occasionally add a little camellia oil so the felt stays just slightly damp. I read about a better version somewhere which involved rolling a strip of felt so it fitted tightly into an old fashioned round tobacco tin (I think it was) to make a pad.

I use Silverglide from Carbatec for larger equipment. Since I started using it my metal working lathe, which I rarely use, has been rust free whereas before it was always a problem.
    Cheers, Glen

The felt in a tobacco tin sounds like a good idea. I have a couple of 'Log Cabin' tins laying around, too.

Off topic, along the same lines, but might be useful:
I keep a little bit of said bumroll in a nearly empty jar of timber wax for waxing the soles of planes during use.

Yes, well spotted Pac Man, particularly as it can't be posted due to it's volatility. Land transport only.

Good idea. I didn't think of using timber wax. I've been rubbing a block of soap on plane soles and the sides of saw blades.

    Pacman, who/where is Jim Davey?

    It's OK - just found out: http://www.jimdavey-planes-sharpenin...6268da2cd.aspx

I've only been into wood working for about 2 months. Had never heard of Jim Davey. I missed the Kiama Show because I was laid up with a crook leg.
