Default A weekend to quick fixes + the Skip from heaven

    Morning,

Just staggered into work (no not drunk) after a very busy weekend.

Started of Saturday morning cleaning my 5yo sons room out, and realised it wardrobe could use some more shelves and quickly nipped into the garage/workshop and in the space of half and hour knocked up some free standing shelves for inside his cupboard.

Next into the kitchen to assist SWMBO in the kitchen when she commented that the tea/coffee making supplies were spreading out over the bench, brain storm again, down to the garage and 2 hours later another free standing shelving unit made to store the teabags, coffee, etc. Back in the good books again. Got to oil it next weekend.

So much for spending Saturday making my wifes Christmas present. But being in the good books of my wife usually gives me the Sunday to myself in the workshop (good investment IMHO).

Sunday morning woke with a start with the sound of my 9yo daighters book shelf crashing down - despite my repeated warnings about climbing it she did not listen and so a good few hours were spent salvaging what I could to install a temporary replacement.

Next off to Bunnings for some brackets, and saw a skip outside a home, and quite literally slammed on the breaks (alas ABS does not allow for dramatic screaching of tires these days) and reversed to the skip and lo and behold there was a pile of floor board of houn pine, knocked on the house, asked it I could take them - thinking I was some nutter asking for such 'rubbish' - happily agreed to placate this drooling individual in her door way.

Rushed home hooked up the trailer and sped to the skip - okay I may be a little fanatical but were talking about Huon pine here!!!!! If I had got pulled over for speeding I am sure I would have got off explaiing to the police why I was in such a rush.

Anyhow came home with 60+ floor boards at least 8' long of huon pine. Brackets forgotten I then sorted them our looking for damage pieces. It wasn't until about 5:30pm did I remembr the brackets and drove to bunnings and picked them up just before it closed.

Spent the next hour fixing up my daughters book shelf and then spent the evening happily telling my wife about the Huon pine I had picked up, she was polite enough to smile and give me the "thats nice dear" look of a wife married to a woodcrafter.

Reluctantly I conluded that sleeping in the workshop to ensure my floorboards were feeling safe was a bit over the top.....

All in all a very haphazard weekend but definately a rewarding one.

    Cool. Good scrounging!

I didn't realise that Huon pine had been used for floorboards. Over our way, Baltic pine was all the rage. 1 inch thick and long as you like. In our last house we had Baltic floorboards throughout, and in the hallway (1894 building, long central hallway), every second board ran full length - would have been over 35 feet I think.

    Andraax,
I spent the weekend with my local Rural Fire Service cleaning up after the big storm we had here on Friday. If you are around any of the suburbs that were affected, keep an eye on any skips, as there is going to be a lot of 2nd hand timber about.
We would have cut up about 20 huge gum trees over the weekend, mostly red box. And that was just my crew. As I'm new to woodwork I dont have the knowledge or skills that would allow me to salvage and store this timber correctly but there were some beutiful old trees that are heading for the tip.
I feel good today Silent Bob.

Roadside Timber Supplies Pty Ltd are usually very good to deal with, and even though it is self service the prices are usually pretty good.

Yes virginia, there is a Santa Claus and if you've been good all year he'll bring you a trailer load of huon pine.
There's a boat inside me trying to get out.
    Was it something I ate?
