Default Western Red Cedar or Kirri

    Hi,

I assume no one will remember but I used to read and write here at the woodwork area.

I have had three strokes so I can't very well or right. I'm very sorry if it us difficult to understand what I have written.

I am thinking about building a boat. I need some Western Red Cedar or Kirri. I am in Brisbane. Can you recommend anyway to buy the stuff at a reasonable price ?

Western Red Cedar (Quick strip or other profile) 11 – 12 mm thicknessSufficient strip is required to cover 92 Square Metres. It is suggested 25 M2 be purchased in 31 mm width, the remainder in 63 to 90 mm width.

Need to be long lance not all short ones. I can cut it down from big bits and I am going to Cove etc.

Thank you very much for any thoughts.

    Hi Damian,
you are not forgotten, I’m sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations but happy to hear you’re getting on with it. Cedar Sales would have WRC but even when I purchased some over ten years ago it was quite expensive and I haven’t had anything to do with it since. You could also try Bliz Timbers (used to be Bootle). They may point you in the right direction if they don’t have what you need. Then there is Ken just down the road from you at Korora Specialty timbers on Hawkesbury Rd. Well worth a visit to his shed.
    cheers
    Michael

    Hi Damien

I see that Kiri is an alternative name for paulownia, hope we are talking about the same timber.

Have you sourced or priced either timber recently?

Thirty years ago, both were readily available, usually of good quality and reasonably priced. With western red cedar the supply has declined, the quality had plunged and the price has soared. I do nor recall seeing any paulownia in the past 5+ years.

Hi Damian, I remember you posting here and your post is quite understandable despite your strokes.

I think I bought my Paulownia from Stuart Bywater for my last boat. His business is more about wood surfboards as I recall but he also sells plantation grown Paulownia. Not certain but I think it comes from the plantation formerly owned by forum member Whitewood.

    Good luck with the project.

Hi Damian, I can't help with the timbers, but sorry to hear about your stroke. Pleased to see you back and good to know you're getting on with the woodwork.
