Cheers Derek
I think I have met and spoken to you once at a woodworking meeting at the Perth Woodschool.....your skill with hand tools was amazing....
For point number 1, what do you mean by make one side narrower? Do you mean cut away a part of the table.
Its funny as I mentioned to the in-laws about the proportions but they were adament that, that is what they wanted )
For point number 2, what do you mean by join them together as a two piece right angle. Do you have an example of this.?
Cheers

to second Derek
take the legs off and remake them so that the grain runs vertically -- no one will see the dowel holes on the underside of the top
the 5th image you've posted above works for me because the legs, through their shape, appear to grow out of the floor
as I said earlier the edges need to be softer -- large radius round over with some sort a subtle wave or other shape to break up the squarenessregards from Alberta, Canada

The legs look a bit thin for me,would you consider fixing some battens that are thicker to hide the edge, maybe chunky legs would suit the top.

I like the top, it would be interesting to see how things come out when you apply finish.
There has been a few comments on the legs and I think you will agree that these might need something if there are going to be seen every now and then.
What I would do is take them off and put them vertical then look at cutting an arc in them.

Cheers guys
How would I remove the legs though
They are doweled from underneath the top and from the side into a support piece.
The support piece I would have to drill out leaving big holes but it could be done relatively easily but how would I do the vertical dowels??

what tools do you have?
A biscuit jointer (can you borrow one) referenced off the underside would cut the dowel inside the leg and only sacrifice about 11mm of the leg, the remainder of the plug could be removed with a drill, chisel and hand plane
of course if you have a Fein (or the Bosch equivalent) you would be able to cut even closer to the top
a hand saw (or japanese saw) would also work, but could be considered a lot of work
the same techniques will work for the support piece, leaving the leg relatively unscathedregards from Alberta, Canada
