If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

    Buy it here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...292618-6769664

Cost less shipped from the US than it did to buy in Aus.

A brilliant book, with all the joints you could think of.

    I love it.
It is also available, together with the companion books in the Taunton's serie, from my local library. Also free.

Never overlook the free resources in your local library.

Good thread - I thought I was the only nerd that reads "The Encyclopedia of Furniture Making" by Joyce when I'm having a cuppa.

No need to keep looking Waldo. Your ultimate book is the IKEA cattledog.

Hi Sb99, i was where you are now in 1988, except the budget didnt extend to the triton. i built a lounge suite (2 x 2 seater and 2 x 1 seater, all with footstools, corner unit of massive proportions and coffee/nesting tables), dining suite (8 seater) and bunks for the kids and heaps of other items, with just a circular saw, sander, b & d workmate, 3 cheap chisels, a hand held drill, a hammer and a lot of determination. no books and no tuition beyond one term of woodwork in grade 8 and that was in the first term on mondays, with half of them being public holidays. you dont have to make this stuff hard, but some do. most of the stuff ive built way back then is still in use. use the books and resources by all means but just do it anyway

Both books by Joyce are woodworking bibles.

very well spoken Mate. the only one I would add too Ross's and Lignum's lists is "understanding wood" (and the Tage Frid collection if you want too. )

I know this is a bit of an old thread but... The book that I go to most often is:

Albert Sack's The New Fine Points of Furniture

If you have a passion for high end period furniture there's not too many books better as a reference.

sb99, my advice is don't buy any book yet. Go to your municipal library and read a selection of their woodwork books. You can always keep photocopies of interesting bits.
