Wheel/castor/roller/ball/thingy
G'day all,
I'm looking for a castor that is simply a ball, like a giant ball bearing, enclosed in a sphere with small ball bearings between the giant ball and the sphere so the ball can rotate in any direction without swinging around a leg like normal castors. I've tried to draw what I mean in a section diagram attached. I know you can get these as I've seen them before, but I can't find them anywhere, including google - part of the problem may be that I don't know what they are called.
Does anyone have any idea what they are called, and where they can be got?
Cheers,
Adam

I found some on Blackwoods web site - but they seem to be used mainly for conveyor belt operations when you want to change directions, so the ball transfer are used with the roller facing up. I'm thinking of using these critters for castors for a couple of mobile storage drawers like you see in your office - want to use these so I can put bun feet on the cabinet and embed the ball transfer inside the bun feet so you don't get those ugly looking castors swinging around all over the place.
I'm trying to minimise making an idiot of myself, so, does anyone know if these things will work with the ball facing down, and will it riding on carpet cause problems with the bearings?
Cheers,
Adam

Unless you intend enter the annual Canberra "mobile storage drawers like you see in your office" race I can't see why not.
I presume they are sealed and it's not as if they'll be constantly rolled about ...is it...???

Just a thought, maybe the point of contact is a bit small. Wouldn't it want to bury its self into the carpet? Hafele do a wheel in a housing that may work with what you want to do. I'll find the part number.

Enfield Guy is right, the ball conveyor makes a point contact on a hard floor and a quarter of the entire weight of the object presses on that point. Once upon a time I made a set of heavy but moveable benches that could be re-arranged as jobs changed in the factory. The ball conveyors chewed up a steel trowelled concrete floor in only weeks and, before they chewed up the floor, they kept migrating to the lowest point on the factory floor!

Adam I have done similar some years ago where they were used on carpet if they are not kept clean lint fibre etc jams them up otherwise we had no problem. As I said before check out the castors at Bunnings. I have seen steel ones as well as a Nylon type I am sure. As Fletty said if they are used on wood or smooth surfaces they can do a fair bit of damage.

G'day all,
Thanks for the tips/responses. Looks like my gut feelings are pretty much on target. For interest, the cabinets will be like the little office drawers that hide under desks and will be full of beading making stuff plus a sewing machine, so no great weight. The carpet is pretty old so is fairly flat. Can't see us replacing it any time soon, so it should be ok for a while. They shouldn't move around too much by themselves on carpet and the missus will only be moving them around now and then - really only need the wheels so that when she wants to move them she can without too much trouble (plus I get extra bonus points for more equipment purchases ). I take note of the potential damage to hard flat surfaces - the only possible candidate is some floor tiles. I'll take some photos and do a thread to show you how it looks - plan to make the lot out of vic ash/tassie oak using a couple of ideas from some woodworking magazine plus the weave top design from a table I saw on here last year (I think it was by Lignum?) looked amazing and I've always wanted to give it a go.
Cheers,
Adam

I don't know how to post a link, but. Google hafele and look up page 10.26 in their cattledog. I reckon the ones you should consider are 661.04.309. Surprisingly cheap actually. I am planning on using these in a desk I am currently working on. Good quality item that seems to be well engineered. I reckon 4 would cost you about $30 or so probably including the postage. No connection by the way.
