Default Whiteboard, general advice and where in Melbourne?

    Hello,

I am planning to build a spare bed with attached cabinets/shelfs (already designed).
With my limited tools home I hesitate a little bit to cut bigger items on my small table saw. I am looking for a company where I can order my 19mm whiteboard already cut to size and with laminated edges.
Can anybody recommend somebody in Melbourne (preferable in the West) who delivers as well?
What is a typical price for this kind of work?

    Thanks already,

    Chris

I don't know if you can get 19mm whiteboard. 3mm whiteboard can be purchased at most hardware stores.
However if you mean 19mm white laminated particleboard try a cabinet maker.

I think you are reffering melamine coated board if so I am not recomending them but Bunnings will cut it to size for you, you will have to edge it yourself but that is not difficult, other wise as said above try a Cabinet Maker I think you find it a fairly costly option

Maybe I am using just the wrong terms and I should find the right name for it first (sorry, not a native English speaker)?!
How is that sort of white laminated chipboard stuff/melamine called what is commonly used for those cheap flatpack furniture?
I just assumed it is called whiteboard, but possibly you are right and it is called particleboard!

I am not limited to 19mm material, I just thought that’s a common thickness?!
So what do I need to look for when planning a white piece of furniture (in my case a bed with “integrated” shelfs)?

I once built a computer cabinet as there was none in the size of my computer, I thought the material was called whiteboard but maybe I am wrong. Also can't recall the thickness, for sure more than 13mm, maybe it is 16 and not 19mm?
In fact I laminated the edges on my own, but using the rough blade of my crappy little table saw and my homemade laminating of the edges were maybe good enough for a hidden PC cabinet (sits under the table) but not for a “real” piece of furniture.
I do have handy skills to build something but not the right tools to create a smooth straight cut, time is the next problem.
That’s why I am looking to get these parts pre-done, so I “only” drill and assemble them.
Maybe some advices first what material I need to look for (in case it is not called laminated particleboard as Jack suggests)?

Is a cabinetmaker the right address to get that done?
I am maybe a bit naïve but thought there are places who are specialised just in selling that material (in worst case I laminate the edges on my own but I am a bit afraid it may not look professional).
Somebody told me to stay away from Bunnings as the chance is big that the boys there are not cutting accurate as specified.

Any idea what a cabinet maker would charge (does it go by sqm plus linear meter of laminating the edges?)?

    Cheers Chris

I work in a cabinet shop using a couple of ton of 16mm white melamine a week. In the trade it is known as whiteboard, while the fancy stuff for faces (doors, drawfronts panels etc) is colloquially refered to as colourboard.

We use some 19mm but in a satin finish MDF as a substrate for painted faces, rather than as stand alone finish. We also use 18mm moisture resistant partical board as a base for stone benchtops and 38mm as a base for laminate.

I think that the melamine board sold at Bunnings etc is 16mm also, that is the fairly standard thickness for carcasses.

Look for Board and Panel suppliers in the Yellow pages or similar, some will offer a full CNC cutting/drilling service, but I not sure about delivery or overall cost. We generally source whiteboard in packs (30 or 35 sheets) 2420 x 1820 through Laminex, with Robot trading as an alternative supplier.

Edit The 19mm that I highlighted above is actually 18mm, Brainfade.

I get my whiteboard/melamine and ply from

    Plyco at Faifield and Mornington

They sometimes have specials on packersheets (slightly damaged at cheaper rates)
