    Default Wine Barrel Hot Tub

    Hello All from Italy.

I finally had the chance to get a Barolo barrel (~60 years old). Formerly used for beer, at least 2" thick Oak. 3000 liters (still smells of wine)

I would like to make a garden hot tub out of it.

    My worries are:

    - it's a horizontal barrel: will the side hold the weight if tilted to vertical?
    - I would just remove the top and use it as is, but it's very high if tilted, so if I cut it in 2 pieces it would be wider. Downside is the top big port that will not hold anymore, and I'm also worried it will fall in pieces. I cut secure the rings with screws.

    Any hint is very welcome.

    Many thanks

i dont think that cutting it in half will compromise its structural integrity provided the rings are secure, thats my opinion anyway
    cheers joel

This is an interesting idea. I would like to know if this would work so I will be watching this thread for replies.

What if you add an extra reinforcing ring each side of the cut?

Barrels hold wine so they will hold water, however keeping the water sanitised (safe) is the issue. The wood will harbour microscopic bacteria and in warm water they will flourish. So unless you have a rigorous water testing/treating regime keep your head above water. Lessens ear and eye infections.
    cheers

thank you all for the hints.

I could use the spare rings to reinforce it! cool.

as for the water I will use some filtration system chlorine, and change the water often: I have a well )

PS: my dad builds stuff with wood since decades, he's actually building me a storage cabinet. I recently acquired an old cast iron sawmill (like 1935). Will post the pics of the restoration in a separate thread. Not sandblasting or repainting though, just making it spin again for the moment.
