Thread: WIP - girly looking shelves.

Looks alright to me so far... I'm not too sure why you think they look girly.

Now, once you have 'em assembled, then I'll happily tell you where you went wrong.

Minor hijack, watching the news tonight and there was a raid on a bikie house. Film crew scanned over the bar and between all the Jack Daniels & Johhny Walkers was a bottle of Malibu. Maybe they would like a condiments shelf once you are finished this one. Back to watching the WIP .

Watching wth interest as usual, Jake.

It's always fascinating to see you using your various hand planes to create the joints that I (we?) routinely take to the router table or bench saw. Great to study a craftsman at work via your WIP's.

I'm not much of a craftsman, but thankyou.

I didn't get any time yesterday, and its just too cold this morning. I'll try and get more photos up soon.

Struggling to find time for it. Did a bit yesterday arvo.

Kinda see how the legs will come together. Th floating tenons I'll just make from these strips I've pre-planed (those two bits coming in from the left). I'll dock a whole bunch off next, of a stop. pic 3.

pic 1 - There it is standing dry fit.

pic 2 - Just gonna make a little frame up on top for the crown. Just a little simple profile. Origionally had ideas of something more, but I couldn't think up anything that look ok.

With an astragal moulding below it wrapping around. Though I'll use a smaller profile than I'm holding up there. Use that down the bottom as well. Need to plane up about 5 metres of it.

pic 3 - got to stop the bottles from falling off. Theres the easy way with just dowel running accross. But when ever I see dowel I sort of screw up my nose a bit. But I'll probably just use it anyway, cause I'm running out of time.

pic 4 - Did have the idea of using up some stained glass offcuts I have like this sort of thing. groove the top rail and stick strips of glass in that. green glass goes with the 'green frog foods' product I suppose.

But that'll take too long too I think. Need it finished by Saturday morning. And I've only got a couple of hours after work to do it. I'm not getting paid enough really for it anyway. But I want to do a good job.

pics 1 - 3.......Planed out all this little astragal moulding. Real small. So just a few passes of the plane and its done. Put it down on both sides of scrap, then ripped off the pair......rejointed the left over...put it down again a couple of times........ripped off........Then once I had enough, split each piece into two, and thicknessed it all down to what you see in pic 3. (if that made sense)

.Also planed up a small crown. I wanted something a bit bigger, but its done now. .....Didn't take any photos of that process. did it with ovolo, then rebate plane , then small bead.

With the astragal strips and crown done, I could checkout the legs to recieve them as they come accross the rails ( the posts are wider than the rails you see)....which is what I'm trying to show in pic 4.

Then I drilled all the holes for the dowels. Docked the dowels to length. Dowels look horrible. Suddenly the whole thing looks like a spice rack.

Then clean up before glue up. Take a single full length shaving of every side of every piece. Nice straight pass. Sharpens up all the joints and cleans off all the pencil marks etc in one go. Always remind myself to take just one pass only else there's risk of interfering with the tightness of joints etc. then lightly aris the edges with sandpaper (just a little bit) pic 5.

doing a 2 stage glueup. easier with so many little pieces floating about.

Glued up the back and front tonight.

Tomorrow morning plan to glue it all together. Afternoon/night rush a couple of coats of finish and goodbye to the spice rack saturday morning. (looking forward to it) .

You're the king of hand planes, and no matter what it is you're making it's always enjoyable to watch your progress. and I get to learn something too.

The thing that impresses me Jake, is that you're in a real hurry to get this finished, and don't have any spare time. But you still take the time to do a WIP, because it is an interesting job (even if you think it is a bit girly!). Love your work, have a greenie.
