    Default wip ipad box

    Hi all,
the old man has asked me to make him a ipad box, i picked up some slabs of sheoak a while back so i thought i'd give it a try. I finally got my workbench finished and will be off work soon for chrissy.

My plan is to route out the dimensions of the ipad into the sheoak, hinge the 2 sides together and get going with some carving work with the grinder. I hope to keep the natural edge on it but we'll see how well it matches.

I'll throw some pics up of the sheoak i'm using and a couple of my new workbench.

Hey Spencer sounds like a good project. But shouldn't it be the other way 'round?
The young bloke has the ipad and the old bloke makes the wooden boxhaha

Like the bench, looks like something's about to happen

There world is changing that's for sure. My wife has an iPad and she is the one who usually gets my technological hand-me-downs.

Watching your progress on this with interest Spencer.

    Cheers,
    Af.

A couple of ideas for you to consider.

if the box is dropped with the Ipad in it it will still take an beating. What about incorporating a thin neoprene lining of some kind especially in the corners where they are prone to no flexing very much.

One of the neat thing about the case my wife's ipad has is that it also turns into a neat stand.

thanks for the great advice guys. as for the lining incase of a drop, i was thinking of lining it with felt, velvet or maybe some leather. i have done a little bit more work on it. i've routed out most of the area for the ipad to sit in, i now need to get a cove cutter bit for the router to get a radius in the corners of the rebate so the ipad fits in snugly. once i'v done this then i will fit the hinges, and then start some of the carving work. I've managed to keep the natural edge as a feature and it looks pretty cool. im thinking of putting in some magnets but not sure if they will affect the screen.

got a few shots here, fairly self explanitory. i recently bought one of those cheap macro lenses for the camera and have gotten a little bit close and personal with some sheoak..

    ta, spencer.

Looking good there Spencer. I have a macro setting on the "point & shoot", love the super sharp close up detail.

yer i've kept an eye on those ones before. this one is different in the way that it is a box for the ipad. it will look like a solid piece of she oak with the natural edge and then it will open to show an ipad, beauty with technology (atleast i hope it'll be beautiful). I hope to get it done by chrisymas for the old man, i've got a full day off on friday so i'll hop right into it then, a little busy to get much done in the next cople days.. i'll keep you all posted...

appologies for the big gap between posts but i've finally finished off the box. Fairly straight forward..

5 coats of danish oil, adhesive backed felt, carbatec bought hinges and magnets (although the magnets dont do anything because theyre too weak, but wasn't sure if stronger ones would affect the screen of the ipad).

    i hope you enjoy..

hmmm for some reason i can't upload any more photos, can anyone help me here?
