I'm still negotiating that one -- access to a bedroom or family / rumpus room -- as my play space.
Nearly bought a house with a whole level that I could use as a "workshop"

Default WIP - Maloof inspired rocker

This is the rocker I mentioned a few posts back. I saw this design but in highly figured QLD maple at Bungendore gallery a while back. It’s made by a bloke called Tony Kenway and I reckon it’s amazing. This particular one is quilted blackwood. I never seem to find these types of timber in 50mm plus, where does one find them?

    Cheers

I would imagine that Tony has a relationship with a number of timber getters/ suppliers and would be happy to pay quite large price premiums for the material. At a guess.

$20000 for something like that was the last number I saw.

As luck would have it, Tony’s QLD maple rocker was at the Bungendore gallery when I visited over the weekend. From doing a bit of reading, he had it on display/for sale in 2014 with a few other makers and it looks like it’s returned again. The chair is unbelievable and it certainly inspired me to get mine finished.

We might need to have a chat in a few months Chris, hoping you may have some dry fiddleback blackwood in stock then?

Hi, I noticed this thread when I got the last email with the Forum's Update. I have to admit that I smiled quietly to myself when, right near the start, you said that you had a baby due in 6 mths and hoped to have it done by then. Mine took 2 yrs on and off and it has nowhere the refinement of others. I chose to make mine out of old Red Gum fence posts. The wood is stunning and yet most old posts get cut up for firewood
Here are a couple of pics....one at each end of the process. Btw, I noted that you said next time that you would laminate the back rest spindles. I did this on mine because I didn't trust the Red Gum not to snap if I didn't. I specifically went for a more rustic look rather than the very elegant lines that most of these Maloof rockers have. I wanted it to look a hundred years old straight away.

Yep, I had the intention of finishing the rocker before my daughter was born but clearly that didn’t work out.

Your rocker looks nice though, thank for sharing. Do you have anymore photos of the chair? I’m particularly interested in the laminated back slats. Also, how did you find working with red gum? I recently saw a huge figured red gum slab but I thought it would be tricky to do the shaping with.

Working with red gum is difficult. It takes the edge off tools quicker than most timbers. Also, some of these posts had lots of fiddleback grain which leads to tear out if the tool is not VERY sharp and sometimes even then. A few years ago, I invested in a Tormek T7 and haven't looked back. As they advertise, I can get a really fine edge again and again. And each time, it's the same bevel. Easy repeatability.

Using old fence posts had it's problems as well. I had to check each post for nails that often had rusted away so that the only part left was quite deep in the wood. On the brighter side, in keeping with my desire to make this chair look old and rustic, I didn't fill the nail holes or other flaws in the timber. They add character. (Although I did use an epoxy where the laminations had sap runs. Max strength required esp in the rocker laminations.)Nails from the fence posts.jpgI know all of this runs contrary to the very fine craftsmanship shown by Sam Maloof and just about everybody who copies his work. I'm ok with that and, in any case, my skills just aren't up to such fine workmanship. I mentioned earlier that my chair took 2 yrs on and off. There's a hidden confession there. I'm retired, so time is no excuse. The real reason is that I've never done anything near as complicated as this rocker and there were times when I would be scared of the next step and I would have to walk away until I could get my head around how to proceed. That sometimes took days, weeks or even months.

I had intended to do a second rocker as well, but in the end, I couldn't bear the thought of another 2 yrs (or even one year) just to do the same thing over again.

A number of people have asked me to make them one and I have said... Yes, but I'll need $5000-. Is that ok? After they pick their jaws up off the floor, I explain that that's a bargain for more than a year's work. I've had no takers so far . I'm thinking of doubling the price to keep it that way.

Exactly the best thing to do. I often find that a little distance from a job helps the thought processes.

I have to do that myself on all sorts of things
I'd be upping it pretty soonish - 5 grand is almost a bargain!

Yes, but with all due respect to your wife, the ignorant will always have difficulty understanding.
