WIP: S-Table
What have I got myself into?
http://cdn.woodworkforums.com/images/editor/attach.gif
I made a hall table for my wife, and she was really excited about it. So when she started looking at telephone tables to fill a space, I offered to make her one. Then she showed me what she wanted....
Where to start...
I have a piece of tas oak from the same bookcase I made the hall table out of. I also have some dressed Qld maple in 35x19 and 135x19 (or close to).
I could dovetail / finger joint the joins, but how to make them strong enough to survive? Any ideas ...?
BTW, if you would rather spend $199, the inspiration is available from Freedom...Cheers, Richard

What about splined mitre joint? It has a proven record as a strong joint.

Hmm.. Thanks Wongo, good idea. And if I made it out of laminated 19mm Qld maple, I could use the laminations as the joints, maybe, which would give me about 10 joins. If I used the tas oak, there's a bit more work in the planing and cutting the joints, but not so much in the lamination.
Cheers, Richard

How about a mortise joint from two angle at 90 degrees.
I recall a chair build like that posted on this site. Or the newer festool domino that gets a very deep cut.

Christos, you'll have to explain that in more detail - I'm not sure what you mean!

Like this one.
You can certainly do it without a Domino machine, but it is much hard without one.

Oh, a machine. I don't use those. Don't they make loud noises?
Cheers, Richard

They do and that why you should wear these to protect your ears.

That's what I was referring to what Skew ChiDamn posted.
Then how about not using the machine and doing this by hand?

Skew, those links are just what I need, thanks. I reckon if they're strong enough for chairs, they'll do fine for side tables.
Wongo, Christos, I don't really do machinery, but thanks for the ideas.Cheers, Richard

Ah, I see - although I'm not sure what my wife is going to say about the hearing protection.
So, a floating tenon, set across the mitre. That's sort of like a splined mitre, too, isn't it?Cheers, Richard

That's good, a couple of new options, I'll stew on them over night.

I do not expect that you are going to get much weight on this phone table. I will be waiting to see what you come up with.
