Default WIP - Tai Chi sword

    Hi all,

Started making a sword for my mum who does tai chi.

    Heres some photos.
    Blade - american oak
Handle - figured maple? with ebony inlay
    Guard - blackwood
    Pommel - ebony

Having trouble with the ebony pommel, that stuff is like granite . . .

    Default Pommel

I hope it turns out allright.

I redid the pommel using a bench grinder to shape it.

    Time Out!

You used a bench grinder to shape wood?

What you've done so far looks good, although I have no idea what a Tai Chi sword looks like. So watching with interest.

Heres a photo of a couple of steel swords: File:Two Jian.JPG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dont all woodworkers shape wood with a bench grinder? I used it because the ebony was like a piece of stone, hard stone. In the end, I think it actually worked quite well, and with a smooth from a rasp and polish with up to 3000 grit, it came up looking amazing.

The guard is now giving me some issues, so am working on getting that looking good. Will use some ebony in that too. And the handle needs a re-shape. Getting there though . . .

Do you mean a Disk/Belt sander?

Because if you mean what you say, a bench grinder (Carborundum wheel etc), nope, you'll be the first person I've heard of shaping wood on one.

It's ah, definitely a bench grinder, used for metal work. Gotta use what you got available I guess.

    Exclamation

Bench grinders are extremely versatile machines. I've used one to grind the top off my thumb!!!

More bench grinding to shape the ebony sides of the guard. The spacers either end of the handle are buffalo horn

the balance is pretty nice because the pommel is a heavy chunk of ebony. It feels similar to some of the steel swords I own, so that worked out well. If I was to do it again, the only change would be make the blade out of a nicer looking wood than oak, but it still looks good. Glad you like it.
