In canada a tradie could buy a pocket sized reference book for such things as the formulas I've been asking about in most hardware or timber outlets. Is there a trade level version available in Aus.

The engineers black book, compiled by pat rapp and published by sutton tools (p&n) is what you are after, now in second edition with more stuff
All sorts of fitter & turnery stuff, metric to imperial ( decimal / fractional ) and guage comparison tables, drilling & tapping of even the weirdest threads, all sorts of geometric stuff and the pages are plastic coated. and it is pocket sized.
I got mine off the counter at the funny little bolt shop in the old post office on evans rd salisbury.
I've been meaning to try chasing a supply of them.
Hair & forbes have a similar one that I havn't looked at
cheersAny thing with sharp teeth eats meat.

People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.
