This is why I like working with wood
Hi all,
Sorry for the philosophy, but I get all misty sometimes.
This is what I like about woodwork. You go and by some boards and think they'll be fine. You take them home, plane and thickness them, resaw them to width, plane and sand them, dig a few holes in them, oil them and sand them again and you get what I've shown below. Beautiful colour, texture, design and feel. And the blurry tree did the lot, I just added my signature. Not a religious man at all, but such beauty all around!!
Regards

Hi HH,
Sorry, just blown away by the quarter cut Oak. Its part of a Spice Rack, most of which is Oak, with American Beech back panel. There will be three drawers at the bottom, made with White Ash back and sides and with Red Cedar fronts. Most likely the drawer panels will be joined using Red Gum dominoes to contrast the Ash, I'm not sure the Cedar would be adequate. I have an idea for the handles, they may be Huon Pine or Ebony, not sure which. The Cedar below has not had any prepration as yet. Please forgive the state of construction, but I've still got some work to do. I'll post pics of the finished fracas.
Regards

Yes! Isn't it great watching the wood come alive in your hands, seeing the figure and texture come though?

Rob you must like your food spicey, that rack looks more like a wall cabinet.
Guess it must be a scale thing with the photo.
Will wait for a finished shot as I have to build one myself (me plagiarize?)to try and regain half a shelf in the pantry, not to mention ease of reading the lables.
Somehow I dont think mine will be in the same league as yours.
Rough as guts is my middle name.

totally agree with you. also scent is important for me which is why sometimes i catch myself leaning forwards to sniff the image. Comes from smelling freshly split posts on a damp morning in the bush and, also, looking at the range of colours from the darker colours of the heart, through the lighter reds, creams, whites, tans and the fresh sappy smell. Hmm, sometimes it is a little sad too so i would find myself thanking the tree sort of respectfully.
