What Wood has alot of exotic patterns?
Most plywood & veneer is so boring. Every now & then you might get some large knots in the wood along with alot of other details. But in general pine, veneer is so boring.
I'm looking for wood that is loaded with detail & looks old vintage like a log cabin settings rather than mass produced generic patterns.
If you cut a large tree down the core from birds eye can look amazing with detail. Thats what I want.

Many timbers can provide what you want, but you have to go looking for it. You can get some very nice figure in Tas Oak, but you have to look through all the birds in the rack to find them. I don't know where in Melbourne you are, but a trip to Mathews Timber inRooks Road Vermontshould be the first place to look . The yardsmen are very knowledgable and helpful
Regards,
Rob

I am a bit of a fan of camphor laurel slabs cut from stumps or forks. I cut the timber into 3 mm veneers and glue them onto MDF with a cheap vinyl vacuum press. Here is a coffee table made that way.

As the others have indicated, whichever way you go there is some very nice timber around, but you need to hunt around for it.

For something special I've found it best to go to a veneer supplier and get them to arrange for it to be pressed onto your preferred substrate. Doesn't cost too much.
Peter Scott-Young in Ringwood has a fantastic selection and is endlessly patient in helping you sort through it. There's another company in Campbellfield, can't recall the name, which also has a good selection for larger jobs.Cheers, Glen

Same situation and same process here at 53N = you have to hunt it down. Reads like you've got some direction in your hunt. Good luck. Tree stumps are quite interesting.
We've got "tree rustlers' here, stripping bark off Douglas Maples, looking for Bird's Eye figure. Killing dozens and dozens of big trees in the search. Every once in a while, a tree disappears. How anyone can steal a 60-100cm log in a metro area like Vancouver, BC., without anybody noticing, really stuns me.
