Wood identification
Hi, I purchased this cabinet at a garage sale and have just stripped back the hundreds of white paint coats to reveal this wood. I am wondering if anyone can identify if for me please?
It is quite red in colour, it is solid wood not veneer, the first pic had the flash on and isn't as accurate in colour as the others.
Thanks a lot, Rachelle

hi, thanks for the replies, I have had a few people say it looks like red cedar. It is not overly hard, if i scrape the tip of my fingernail along the top i can leave a mark. As for heavy, i am sure it is not any more heavy than you would expect it to be - i.e. i don't think it is a wood that is particularly heavy by trait.
Is red cedar hard to buy or expensive? Ive looked at Bunnings but can't see it there.

Hi, I think it is much too red to be Kauri Pine...I appreciate that offer for you to look at it - I am rarely out Newcastle way - but appreciate the offer.

I think the colour isn't too far out to be old kauri, I have used some that colour, but the grain is far more reminiscent of red cedar. You don't see that open pore structure though kauri, it is very tight grained.

Could be the colour and resolution on my laptop. Cedar it is then
The smell should be the other give away. Kauri doesn't really have a smell much, Cedar a smell like old musky furniture and antique shops.

I'm not seeing the red in the pics as you describe from here. The colour comes across as being closer to the colour of honey. Anyway, here's a nic nac box made long ago from recycled Kauri to compare with. The outside of the box has got a bit grotty but the underside of the lid is a good indication of Kauri color, albeit with some linseed oil finish.

I'd go with Red Cedar as well, however, Isn't there one that is very similliar but comes from PNG, might be that one
