    Default wood lathe

    Hi all
I have just been given a bench top lathe with a bed size of approx 900mm
I had some 70x70 pine around so I had a play with that to turn up some legs and the result was quite good. The question is I have been told silky oak is a good timber to turn so can anybody tell me where I can purchase it and any suggestions on other timbers that are easy to use untill I become more experienced. I live south of Brisbane near Beaudesert.
    Regards to all Slug

I have been turning some silky oak and yes its great.

I got some blanks from the woodcraft shoppe in Towwomba but i think they are closing soon.

I got some expensive stuff from Lazarides Timbers in Banyo but it was excellant quality. They are in Hurricane street and i recomend them.

South east Qld turning supplies at Yatla would be a good bet as woould Mullimbimby timber works http://www.mullumbimbywoodworks.com.au/.

Also woodworld at labrador might be good.

    A word to the wise.

Silky Oak can trigger quite severe allergic responses in susceptible persons. If you find you get itchy, or have breathing difficulties, you may have to be careful with the timber.

Al, yes and it also smells like cheese, my kid calls it cheeswood. At first i didnt like it but then i started to enjoy how easy it is to work and the grain can be really nice.

I guess we should also use either the correct breathing filters or turn as I do in a very well ventilated area ( my verandah ) and clean up regularly.

Some of the guys have a PDF of woods and their effects but its pretty personal in that what affects one person will not affect others.

I have heard of red cedar really setting people off.

I had a bad reaction to sanidng gidgee a while back, knocked me aorund for a few days...

Slug, if u want to send me a PM, a si live near toowoomba, next time i collect some blanks i could grab u a supply.

    as mentioned above

    silky oak
    camphor laurel
    red cedar
    mango
    cyprus pine

are good for learning, easy to turn and give good results.

    Hi slug - welcome,

My father in law cannot even handle silky oak without getting a rash - so be careful. The lists are a guide and Neil has one on his site if you care to look.

My counsel would be to turn anything you can get a hold of Even pine is a great tutor but you need to experience some of the harder timbers too if for no other reason than to feel the difference and the effect of the sharpness of your tools.

All the timbers above are great to turn but the best practice ones are of the free variety

yes, i dont mind paying for some nice blanks but i do get a decent supply of cyprus offcuts from the local dump as builders drop their skips there. I also glue some bits together from this in laminate form.

The dump has some iron bark and some time some waste form garden clearence , i have some Morton bay fig drying under the house....

so hunting around can provide results

but i do wish people would dump quality cabinet woods and nice burls more often ?

    Default supply engaged...

Tony, if you want to engage a supply please call Paul on

    0427876963.

He's the fella that was supplied the shop where i buy some of my blanks. If you have some idea of what you want, say 10 silky oak blanks of varying sizes he will do it for you. His prices have always been pretty good.

It's probably better for you if u deal direct with him, rather than have me buy them and then have u or yr friends pick em up.He has all types of wood and blanks and will cut and prepare them to any sizes u need.

LMK how it goes for u.

    regards
    John
