    Default Wood for outdoor cabinet

    Hi all,
I need to build a small and cheap outdoor cabinet to house my backyard tools.
I wanted to use some leftover pine 2x4s and paint them.

They are not treated though and the cabinet will be fairly exposed to rain. Do you think that a good coverage with paint will be enough to protect the wood? Or do I need to use treated pine (which I would like to avoid to minimise exposure to sawdust as I will have to cut it a bit).

    THanks

My opinion is that paint will not be enough. Plus paint is not free anyway.
In terms of exposure to treated sawdust, that is not such a big deal if you cut it outside and also just cross cut it - as opposed to using routers and planners etc. Keep in mind it is the invisible dust that gets in your lungs, you need to avoid. The visible dust is not much of a threat. Cutting it outside will make a big difference and if worried you can wear a mask. It's not like you are doing that everyday for work.

Treated Pine sawdust is going to do you no more harm than normal sawdust, the wood itself and the fine dust particles are far more dangerous than the chemicals in the timber. Just use the precautions you would for normal timber and you will be fine using treated pine. For reference I used to manage a CCA treatment plant in another life time.

    Cheers Andrew
