Thread: Wood pulleys?

The British Navy used Elm and Ash routinely for their blocks and running riigging As Soundman said, Lignum Vitae was also used (called Belignum Vitae) but sparingly due to cost. I think this used to come from the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1lace w:st="on">West Indies</st1lace>.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
In Rotor's application I'm sure the loads would not worry wooden blocks, they would hold up the 3 x 152 foot masts flying 37 sails for a total sail area of 6,510 square yards controlled by 26 miles of cordage. Bit of stress there I expect.
What may be a worry tho is the high RPM and heat etc.
If anyone's interested the figures above relate to HMS Victory. Rather nice I thought as today is the anniversary of Trafalgar, Oct 21 1805. Her specs are below:
Dimensions and Displacement:
Length, overall: 227 feet
Breath, extreme: 52 feet
Height of main mast: 152 feet
Burthen tonnage: 2,162 tons
Displaced tonnage: 3,500 tons<o></o>

Hey, that is a wild and handsome bit of kit there Cliff! I like the pulleys, they've come up well.
Just a thought, where you've got that flywheel, the ring-gear could be made into an indexing head, and use it to facet/groove/plane/route things in the turned wood, at set intervals.

I had thought of that too.
I use an old socket spanner on a bludy great big bolt in one of the 'balance' holes in the flywheel to lock the shaft againt the chassis while I change face plates.
I have an adapter to fit a Bonham 130 chuck on it.
I also have a set of bicycle caliper brakes that I intend to mount around one of the pulleys with a cable down to a foot pedal so I can stop it & hold it. ( I got that idea from Les the one armed turner.)Cliff.

Sorry, wrong thread. I saw "wood" and "pulleys" and thought it was more of Ozwinner's "bunch of wankers"...my mistake, carry on.
Night.
