Wood shavings
Gday everyone!
I'm after some kind of wierd advice.
I'm planing on making a few wooden boxes to put gifts in for my groomsmen for my upcoming wedding. I wanted to place a bed of huon pine wood shavings in it and then gifts on top.
Would the oils in huon pine react with say leather shoes?
If they would react bad is there any safer timber you could recommend? Maybe a less oily one?
Cheers Brady.

You're right, this is weird.
If you're concerned about the shavings, put the gifts in a bag, otherwise just plane up a piece of pine.

Camphor Laurel is what I would pick for the aroma.
For the amount of time the shoes would be in contact with the wood shavings, I would not be too concerned (days not weeks).

As said over the short term it should be OK. It does smell nice. Other way is have the shavings in a small cloth bag to avoid direct contact.

Thanks for suggestions to my strange question haha. The leather shoes, tie and other assorted gifts could potentially be in the box for upto 2 months. I just like the aesthetics of the wood shavings and aroma of huon pine. I do love camphor laurel too and have an abundance of it at the moment.
