wooden hinges
i thought some one may be interested in these hinges that i used on one of my model aircraft. they could be easily adapted to a box lid or anything else. if the hinges were on the edge of the lid it would be easy enough to round off the back of the lid and drill the pin holes. the tongue(?) could be made of metal, brass ok it's not a wooden hinge then but it could still look good. anyway i hope i've started a few of you thinking.

Pivot Hinges in Wood
Trevor,
In my quest to avoid metal hinges in wooden boxes, about 18 months ago I made a few boxes with pivot hinges similar to the model aircraft hinges. I got a few ideas from the book "Making Heirloom Boxes" by John LLoyd. For most of his boxes the lid is just a single piece of wood, albeit often carved in some way with an arbortec.
I was concerned that with the sun beating onto the top of the box that the lids might warp but this hasn't happened. A more conventional lid, with floating panel top is harder to use with a pivot hinge. Here is a pic of one of my pivot hinge boxes out of NG Rosewood.
