It's always good to see a project like this and that looks the goods!!
I often wonder why so much beautiful timber is covered on that black lacquer.
My wife brought 6 dining chairs over from Brazil and hey had been repaired - very badly and coated
with that black lacquer. I dismantled them, stripped them and refurbished them. The timber is what
Ana calls peanut wood. It is quite attractive and so much better to look at now that the natural
colour, not to mention the grain pattern, is on view.
When we were married I bought Ana an old wardrobe ( she wanted it as she saw the potential) and
this was also coated with black lacquer that had crazed badly. I stripped this with razor blades and
did some minor repair work. The unit made from Kauri pine, not obvious in its original state. We now
have a beautiful glass fronted cabinet for storing glassware and other bits and pieces.

Nice, I love to see the true beauty of wood. I keep knocking my self down to slow down and get better on the Refinishing portion. I am getting repeat business doing so. It is a shame to heavily cover some wood. I'm getting started on a oak rocker for my brother and he wants it darkened. I'm going to make it darker, but make the grain pop out

You're correct, and if it is wood I would like to stain rather than paint
