    Post A "woodworker's map"

The area I live in is pretty devoid of woodworking related stuff, so I find that when I travel away from home I look for interesting places that dovetail (ha!) with my woodworking hobby. Timber suppliers, galleries, tool shops, etc.

The problem is that it's hard to find many of these small places, and even harder to remember where they are when you need to. It would be great to have a map I can refer to, so that when I'm in an area I can look up nearby places of interest.

With that in mind I've attempted to create a map that anyone can contribute to, here:

Woodwork Places - Google My Maps

Would love it if you guys added any places you know about which others might find interesting. Places which are small/niche are fine, and I have no problems with people adding their own place of business (as long as it's a place others can visit). Hopefully I've set things up correctly so that anyone can edit.

There are layers for various categories; but feel free to add/suggest others that I haven't considered.

This is fantastic idea. I'd have a few places I can add I'll try later tonight. @woodPixel thought you may like this also

What a brilliant way of doing this! I have been mulling over and wondering how we could all collaborate on something like this here in the community, but was thinking of a list-type arrangement - this is a whole lot better, and thank you for putting it together!

Could I please ask a couple of questions?

As someone who is aware of Google maps, and considering that viewing it, and zooming in and out is the extent of my ability, would it be possible to give a couple of pointers on how we might go about adding to the data on the map with additional places please? It would also be super useful to know how to then add that place to the relevant section in your list, and be able to provide the details in the popup that appears when a place is clicked on.

Is it possible in the map to allocate different colour pins to the various categories (I think these are referred to by the term "layer")? In this way, someone looking for timber merchants could focus on one colour, and ignore other colours (e.g. tool shops, men's sheds etc).

Thank you if this is possible to share/show, and apologies for not being aware of how to do this!

Good questions Midnight. It's my first time creating a map so i'm just learning as well.

    Adding data - Two ways:
    • Search for a place by name then click "Add to Map". After you add it you can then select it from the list and click the little pencil button to add a custom description.
    • Select the "add marker" icon (near the hand icon), place it wherever you want, then add a name/description and click "Save".

When you're saving, it will go into the currently selected layer; but you can also drag/drop between layers after the fact.

Different colours for pins - Great idea, I just did that. Each layer has its own colour now.

This is a truly an amazing idea,
But I’m personally concerned on a security point.

Sally and my self quite often enjoy weekends away driving here and there in Victoria an other states in Australia.
It sometimes is appointed to me to organise these trips including routes and towns to visit.

This map would be just too tempting to use on these trips, especially if every time we stopped at a location, there just happened to be a tool shop, a supplier selling timber or something to do with Woodwork, I think the game would be over.

    Cheers Matt.

Mate! I talked about this on my first day on the forum but never thought to do it as a map.... pure genius.

I'm adding heaps of local Canberra places and mills I know of on the south Coast , but can't work out the colours, etc.... I'll keep at it. Worked it out....

edit - I added three more categories....

    -- "Businesses - interesting"

-- "Finishes, Paints and Coatings" and

    -- "sawmills"

..... I hope these are in the spirit of the venture.... if not, chop 'em! They were for places that are talked about often that don't quite fit a category, but might be worth a yarn to if passing, such as Dunstones biz here in Canberra (Queanbeyan really)

I for one can’t wait for the end of the COVID lockdown here in SA so I can jump in the car to check out the Portland chip terminal .... just want to see how it compares to the one in Corio Bay.

Seriously good idea and will be fun to see the additions.

A great idea. I've added my favourite timber supplier in Brisbane.

I've assumed this should be fairly neutral and objective in terms of description.
